Titel 1 The English-speaking world

Studieplan: The English-speaking world

Titel 2 Identity

Studieplan: Identity - growing up and gender

A theme on identity.

In the first part of the theme “identity”, focus is on the subtheme “growing up”. “Growing up” should be seen as the identity formation that occurs as one grows up and transitions from child to youth to adult. Focus is on: different groups in society, bullying, problems in school, identity, child upbringing.

Key terms:  coming of age, parent-child relationship, dysfunctional family, growing up.

Texts:
Penelope Lively's 'Clara's Day' (short story), 1986.

Charles Bukowski's 'Son of Satan' (short story), 1982.

Behind closed doors (short film)

The Beatles, 'She's Leaving Home', 1967.

In this subtheme, we focus on different aspects of gender issues: sex vs. gender, gender as a social construct, the stereotypical perceptions of the gender roles ascribed to being male or female. To challenge this position the term ‘gender bender’ will be explored and examined.

This topic has set out to introduce gender both as a biological and socially constructed term. The students have worked with different voices within different genres such as short stories, lyrics, articles, speeches, commercials. Themes touched upon are amongst others: stereotypes, male and female identity, norms, sex vs gender, feminism and the debate about gender equality and freedom, sexual orientation, acceptance, heteronormativity, gender identity, pronouns, modern society, gender bender.

Titel 3 Evil

Udgangspunktet er Philip Zimbardos definition på ondskab i TED-talken, "The Psychology of Evil" og den norske filosof Lars Svendsen "4 types of evil" (The demonic/sadistic evil, instrumental evil, idealistic evil, dumb/stupid evil).

Titel 4 US Election 2024

When we are done with this topic, we will:
- know more about the US electoral system and political parties
- have analyzed and compared the two candidates for the 2024 presidential election.
- be aware of some of the current issues discussed in the US.

Wade, tiden omkring Roe v. Wade og den polariserende debat efterfølgende som har ledt til "the overturning of Roe v. Wade" i 2022.

Titel 6 Værk: Let Them Eat Chaos and spoken word poetry(EX

(EXAM)
We have studied Kae Tempest’s narrative poem Let Them Eat Chaos as a literary work. Alongside this, the poet’s live performances of the poem have been incorporated into our analysis and interpretation, with a focus on how the different modes of expression support and complement the overall understanding of the work.

As a framework for the reading of the poem, we will explore spoken word poetry as a genre. This will include, among other things, viewing a documentary as an introduction to the genre and its various purposes and functions. In this context, we will briefly work with Prince Ea’s poem “Can We Autocorrect Humanity?”, which focuses on technology and society and offers a critique of the late-modern society’s obsession with technology. Finally, we will work with #HYHGP – Have You Heard George’s Podcast, which, through a mix of spoken word, storytelling, music, and fiction, addresses themes such as “social class, multiculturalism, inner-city life, crime, and regional languages (MLE) in London. The poems included functions as texts for comparison. The course concludes with a creative assignment in which students, working in groups, can choose between:
1. producing their own spoken word piece (in a self-chosen format), or
2. developing a teaching activity and teaching their classmates about spoken word poetry (reversed classroom).

Overall, the course and especially the reading of the poem focus on themes such as:
identity, loneliness, the climate crisis and consumerism, global warming, social inequality and social classes in Britain, sociolinguistics (MLE – Multicultural London English), gender, and Brexit.

This course focuses on Orwell's 1945 novel Animal Farm. We work with the allegorical nature of Animal Farm, in order for students to be able to critically analyze the novel.
We primarily focus on the following literary elements: symbolism, narrative technique, main themes, characterization, composition. The text is put into a broader stylistic context through an introduction to modernism and intermodernism.

Throughout the course, different literary approaches have been introduced and applied to the text (new criticism, biographical reading, historical/sociological, marxist approach). This functioned as a preparation for SRP.

Titel 9 India - Past and Present (EXAM)

This course explores India both historically and today. Through “Delhi on Chai”, we are first introduced to urban life in India today. We work on India’s history both before and after independence and partition and develop an understanding of the way the British see themselves in relation to the colonies through George Orwell: “Burmese Days” and Rudyard Kipling: “The White Man’s Burden”.
Turning to India today, we are introduced to gender issues and the caste system. Finally, we see how the colonial past still plays a role in India when we look at the way language is used as a postcolonial identity marker.
As preparation for SR5, parts of the course focused on reportages, where the articles “The Lonely Crusade Against Caste” and ““I have sacrificed a lot”: Growing up LGBTQ+ in India” were analyzed with a focus on rhetorical analysis and the concepts of narrative writing and expository writing.

Titel 10 Multicultural Britain (EXAM)

This course focuses on multicultural Britain. We have examined the history of the United Kingdom with particular attention to the period after the Second World War and the migration that emerged in connection with the breakup of the British Empire, taking the Windrush generation as our point of departure. We have explored the issues of immigration and multiculturalism from firstly the Windrush generation through Brexit and up to the present day.
In the course, we then delved into three phases of British migrant literature put into the abovementioned context,  “the arrival phase”, “the settler phase”, and “the indigene phase.” Here, we have read selected texts from each phase, and applied the following terms and concepts when relevant: superdiversity, conviviality, otherness, and hybridity.
