Growing up during segregation
After an introduction working with lyrics related to dreams of poor people, the class spent much time both in class and as homework reading and interpreting Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) [bemærk at sidetal her refererer til kapitelnumre]. The racist social structure of fictional Maycomb and the challenges of growing-up to be a decent human being in an imperfect world were highlighted in the analytical work and the in-class discussions. We worked on expanding vocabulary and the capacity to classify in word class. Written work aimed at exploring personally relatable elements in fiction. We watched the movie from 1962.

Rap lyrics
Class was introduced to the peculiar patterns of rhyme and rhythm in rap. Then seven groups were created to work with seven different themes:
1) Police and Prisons
2) Rich and Poor
3) Selling and Using Drugs
4) Status and Power
5) Misogyny and Feminism
6) Crime, Gangs and Ghettos
7) Politics and Activism
Individualized written work on different songs formed the backdrop for further group work on the themes culminationg in a seminar with presentations from all groups. We concluded the theme by looking at excerpts from Kendrick Lamar and Drake's rap beef, which had just culminated when we had our last classes on the theme.

Elections in the US
We start by looking at the division of legislative, executive and judicial powers in the three branches of government, Congress, Presidency and Supreme Court. The theme focuses on the incongruities of the American electoral system, eg. the indirect election of president by an electoral college that may have a different majority than the popular vote, the huge difference between how many votes it takes to elect a member of the Senate from states with few and many people and also how a state government under the control of one party can manipulate borders between congressional districts in absurd ways to favor election of more party representatives than natural and logical districts would have allowed. We briefly look at the outcome of the election.

The Opioid Crisis
The theme starts out by reading and discussing accounts of the opioid crisis and the way that grassroots from the art world have attempted to identify perpetrators that should be held responsible for the crisis. We continue by reading and interpreting individual chapters from Kingsolver's novel Demon Copperhead (2022). In our reading we both look at the business interests behind the liberal distribution of opioids as well as the precarious lives of poor people in the Appalachians.

Transforming sites to sights in Hamburg
Taking its point of departure in the importance of Hamburg as a stage experience for the early songs of the Beatles, the theme prepares for a field trip that focuses on the way a site can be made into a sight by associating specific visible elements in an environment with certain descriptions and intriguing stories. During the field trip we visit the memorial over the bombing of Hamburg, the Spice Museum, City Hall, sites with street art, music stages, the transformed St Pauli Bunker and the Football Stadion belonging to FC St Pauli. We also visit and investigate the memories associated with the concentration camp in Neuengamme and its many satellite camps.

Surviving to tell the story
Killing on a massive scale is one feature of 20th Century warfare - and may also be a feature of wars in the 21st Century. Surviving a war while the other people die may come at a heavy cost. We read and discuss Vonnegut's novel "Slaughterhouse 5" (1969). Central to the discussions will be how the experience of war is told by a survivor. We discuss the point of view of the narrative voice and the effects of having elements of autobiography inserted into a fictional work. We discuss the role of trauma to the structure of the story line. We look for triggers of trauma with the main character. We watch the 1972-movie and discuss its interpretation of the story. We discuss the science-fictional elements and discuss if the novel can be classified as science-fiction. We work with the confusing effects of exchanging the expected subject with the expected object.

Macbeth and what power does to the mind
We read selected scenes from Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth and discuss why and how power over other people corrupts. We spend time on what war experiences do to men and their way of relating to women. We explore other gendered themes - among them the role of witches - and also how they played out with Shakespeare's contemporaries, and particularly King James the First and Sixth, assuming that he actually watched the first performance of the play. In our reading of Macbeth, we examine the role of choice, destiny and guilt. We also discuss modern examples of megalomania such as they are shown in US President Trump's way of relating to international law.

Horror and primal fears
We watch the Orwell documentary "2+2=5" to support discussions on the role of fear in creating and consolidating dystopian societies and particularly how the threat of being followed and watched constantly affects the personality. We work with horror films as a genre and particularly look for which fears are triggered and spellbind an audience to watch. We use a classification of five primal fears. Seven groups work with seven different movies and present selected images and conversations from the movie identifying emotional expressions of the actors and their impact on us as an audience. We analyze a short story by Edgar Allan Poe to supplement our understanding of the comparable literary genre.
