Titel 8 The Gothic Universe

For the topic on the Gothic Universe we have worked in the online book from Systime with the same title.

Our focus in this topic has been on the three archetypes: the vampire/demon, the mad scientist and the psychopath

In the topic we have analysed the texts with focus on background knowledge of the genre (its characteristics), the Victorian Age, Freud's personality model, the Oedipal crisis, Stephen King's definitions of horror, terror and gross out as well as different approaches (methods) to understanding the texts.

In our analyses we have focused on setting, characters and the uncanny

The students ended the course with making a presentation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde applying a specific approach to the text and discussion advantages and disadvantages in their use of approach (biological approach - socio-cultural approach - focus on the genre - psychoanalytical approach)

Texts read in the anthology:

The Monkey's Paw by W.W Jacobs
