Titel 1 The American Presidential election and rhetoric

In this unit, we will work with the American presidential election focusing on rhetoric and the impact of rhetoric in political communication.
We will start off by working with the American political system and what challenges it faces today. We will also look at what constitutes American values and identity.
We will study background material about rhetoric and elements of rhetoric and then apply that knowledge to our reading of different kinds of texts (primarily campaign ads and speeches).

Titel 2 The Science of...


In this unit, we will study the science of the brain especially focusing on the impact of technology.
We will start out by groups doing research about different topics relating to the brain in order to acquire some background knowledge and terminology.

We will use texts (poetry, video, articles, opinion piece) for acquiring knowledge and to practice analysis.
At the end of the unit, you should be able to:

-reflect on what steals our attention today
- use terminology for poetry analysis
- use methods (e.g. semantic fields) to open up a difficult poem
-analyze non-fiction texts of different kinds including video material
-- discuss whether technology is a blessing or a curse in terms of learning
-discuss whether or not AI is helpful or not in education and in terms of learning how to write analyses
-explain how an essay is structured (e.g. what is a funnel intro? what is the paragraph structure, what is a conclusion)
-explain how to write a good prompt
-explain the difference between using AI as 'makker' (=study buddy) and as 'maker'
-know what concord (kongruens) is and what the rules concerning concord are

Titel 5 Braking the Code - Alan Turing, WWII and Britain

We will study this unit in collaboration with math as part of our study trip to Lodon, where we will see Bletchley Park among other things.
The unit focuses on codes and codebreaking. In math, you will learn about literal codes and the enigma machine (which you will also work with at Bletchley). In English, we will focus on social codes and on Alan Turing. We will explore the historical context of World War II in Britain, the life and legacy of Alan Turing (how he broke the enigma machine, how he broke social codes, and the ethical and social issues raised by Turing’s story.
As a core text, we will read Hugh Whitmore’s drama “Breaking the Code” from 1986, and also deal with drama as a genre.

At the end of the unit, you should:
-be able to give a fairly detailed description of who Alan Turing was, and what his legacy is
-have an understanding of the historical context of World War II focusing on the role of Great Britain
-be able to explain some ideas of what Britishness is and compare these to the idea of the blitz spirit
-be able to explain what the enigma machine was and what the significance of breaking the enigma has been.
-You should also have an understanding of what characterizes drama as a genre.

Titel 6 South Africa (incl Global English and Elf)

This unit starts off by dealing with English as a global language and ELF. We will explore how English came to be a global language and what the relationship is between language and culture. In this connection, we will also deal with the British Empire.

Afterwards we will work with South Africa before, during and after Apartheid. This part of the unit focuses mainly on the land question, the relationship between black and white South Africans, the role of Nelson Mandela and of Desmond Tutu and the TRC.
At the end of the unit, you should be able to:
-explain what English as a lingua franca is
-explain what is meant by English as a global language and what the British Empire is
-comment on how language and identity are related
-discuss the role of English in South Africa
-explain what apartheid was and when it started and ended
-discuss the question of the right to own land in South Africa (historical context and the land question is still a problem today)

-know how to write a paragraph

Titel 8 The American Dream

The American frame of mind can be said to have emerged from the settlers, the pioneers, the revolutionary war and the civil war. The unit aims at creating an understanding of core American values such as freedom, individuality and the American Dream.
We will explore what the American Dream is and what happens if you are unable or unwilling to achieve that dream. In that connection, we will use Merton’s ‘strain theory’ to understand different ways of responding to the pressures of society.
We will also look at how the American Dream has changed through history and discuss whether it is more or less achievable today.

Football Culture in Britain and the US
As a sport, football has the ability to both unite and divide people. There are those who love to watch or play football and couldn’t live without it, and there are those who couldn’t care less.

We will start off by looking at the origin of the word soccer, and at the difference between British football (soccer) and American football (gridiron)
In this unit, we will look at the relationship between football and culture, and explore whether football can tell us something about cultural traits in Britain and the US.
