This is a non-fictional theme about culture in sports in the US.
We will look at thematics such as:
- The view of amateur and pro-athletes as a commodity, not a human with rights, needs or values.
- Feminine ideals VS "male" sports.
- The corrupting power of money in sports.
- The value of having atheletes to idolize that represent you/your culture.
The students learn to use and understand the following terminology:
- Appeal: ethos, pathos and logos
- Rhetorical pentagram: message/intention, topic, writer/sender/speaker, audience/receiver, circumstances, language.

Racial Issues - To Kill a Mockingbird (Exam)
The students have read "To Kill a Mockingbird". The focus of this theme has been racial issues and the history of African americans from the beginnings of slavery untill today. The historical knowledge has been used to put the novel we read into perspective and to understand what kind of society and norms were delt with in the novel.
Aside from the racial issues and historical context, our reading focused on:
- Scout, Jem, Atticus, Calpurnia, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson.
- Setting.
- The perspective of the child narrator and growing up.
- The concept of justice.

Irish Myths and Legends
This theme focuses on the older history, mythology and legends of Ireland. In order to gain an understanding of Irish traditions, culture, values and historical background prior to the English rule.
We have explored the mythological creatures of Irish folk tales such as banshees, druids, witches, fairies etc. We have learned the legend of Queen Maeve and the bulls of Cooley and we have looked at the history of Ireland from 100-1625 where the English had established Henry VIII as King of Ireland (1541) and he dismissed parliament, thereby ruined the tribal system, which had consequences for the Tudors in terms of unrest and rebellion.
