Titel 4 Poetry and Lyrics

In this course we will be working with a broad selection of poetry and song-lyrics. Focus will be on the poetic form in general, figurative language and sound features, but we will also analyze and interpret each text and put it into relation to the historical and literary period in which it was written. A special focus is put on Romantic poetry.

Titel 5 American Beliefs and Values

This course identifies, defines and explores central American beliefs and values. It consists of two parts.

In part one we look into the origins of the beliefs and values and how they are seen in different cultural products (texts, songs, films etc)

Part two focuses on the American political system and re-introduces analysis of non-fiction. This will enable us to better understand and follow the American Presidential election 2024. Students write their SROs based on this course. Focus here will be on an analysis of one of or both convention speeches by Harris/Trump.

Titel 7 Black America

The first part of the course called 'Black America' deals with the black population of The United States - the so-called African-Americans - and their history from slavery to emancipation to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. In this part of the course we will use historical sources, poetry, fiction, speeches and lyrics and thus deal with the analysis of various types of texts.The aim of the course is to provide you with knowledge of both African-American history and culture. The course thus serves as background knowledge for our reading of 'The Hate U Give'.

The main focus in the second part of the course is on the novel 'The Hate U Give' and on in depth analysis of this. The concept of Black Representation is explored.
