Titel 1 Couples with Troubles (Acing Analysis)

During this introductory topic, we will explore how to analyze fiction texts, songs, poetry and films.
A fresh start for those who may feel a bit lost when confronted with fiction texts and teachers with a not-so-hidden love for (over)interpretation ;-)
The point of departure will be an analytical model called 'C-style Analysis'.
Here we will revisit the basics:
characterization and character development, conflicts, crises, climax, conclusion etc.
Of course, we will also cover areas such as style of language, symbolism etc. and we will look at Hemingway's writing style compared to other writers (The Iceberg Method)
We have also analyzed music videos + a poem.

Titel 3 The Roaring 20s and Gatsby

We will investigate the so-called 'roaring twenties'. An era of incredible contrasts and wild cultural innovation!
An age of affluence and decadence for those who had the means, but also an era that highlighted the stark class differences and racial borders being challenged through art and music.
In the process we'll be reading the novel ' The Great Gatsby'
Focus points (among others):
Basic knowledge about the roaring twenties:
Societal development, prohibition, consumerism, urbanization, mass media, entertainment, class differences, the stock market boom and crash etc.

In our study of the novel, we will focused on areas such as:
- Nick Carraway and his role as an elusive and unreliable narrator
- Gatsby's ostentatious and lavish parties and façade (appearance vs. reality)
- Class differences: Newly rich vs. Old money (West Egg and East Egg) and The affluence of 'The Eggs compared to 'the Valley of Ashes'.
- The unattainable American Dream (for those without means)
- Gatsby's ambiguity and complexity
- Symbolism! (Green light, TJ Eckleburg, The Valley of Ashes etc.)

In order to understand 'the Roaring Twenties' we will watch ABC's:
The Century: America's Time - 1920-1929: Boom To Bust

Finally, we are going to watch Baz Luhrman's 2013 adaption of the Great Gatsby and compare its wild postmodern style to the novel
