Titel 1 Digital Youth

As social networking sites and other genres of social media become increasingly widespread, people tend to communicate their identities more and more online. Do our personalities form our online identities or is it the other way round?
This course focuses on some of the consequences of today’s pervasive digitalization of society. The students will analyse various texts (articles, short story, film), dealing with the relation between our online identities and our personalities. As a theoretical framework sociologist Erwing Goffman’s dramaturgical theory will be discussed and applied.

How is the relationship between parents and their children portrayed in modern literature? What norms and values do we usually assign to the traditional nuclear family, and what happens if a family does not live up to these? During this course, we look at different child-parent relationships in order to investigate and discuss the meaning of such concepts as family ties and expectations, relationships and conflicts.
Students are expected to improve their academic knowledge and skills in terms of:
• Differentiating between fiction and non-fiction
• Using proper analysis tools when working with different genres
• Basic language skills, oral as well as written skills

This course is an introduction to the dilemma of Gun Control in the US. The course will start with the Second Amendment and move up to modern day.

This course will focus on WHY people wish for harsher or more lenient Gun Control laws. Most of the texts are related to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

This course introduces the students to rhetorical analysis by reading different speeches, all aimed at persuading the listeners through means of forms of appeal.
The course introduces stylistic and structural devices such as alliteration, triads, anaphora, the three forms of appeal and storytelling.

The focus is not only on HOW these devices are used, but also WHY.
