YA Literature
This course introduces the students to Young Adult Literature through modern classics aimed at adolescents as the target group.
The course introduces the genre, its characteristics as well as introducing the students to modes of analysis, in-depth reading, cinematic devices and group work.
We have read the first two chapters of:

The Giver (Lois Lowry, 1993)

This course entails the ageless struggle of man and machine, introducing some of the horror visions that men had about machines in the 1950s.
We look at the innate human fears and concerns when it comes to robots and machinery and look at whether they are still valid or whether they, too, have progressed and transcended time.

The course will introduce the four types of evil as introduced by Norwegian psychologist, L.F. H. Svendsen, in his book "A Philosophy of Evil".

A short introductory course on the difficulties of being Maori in a country dominated by a new, different culture. The texts delve into the postcolonial issues of language, racism and identity and how these are represented in the three texts.
The class will explore New Zealand literature focusing on the term "otherness" and the strained relationship between colonizers and the colonized. Furhermore, the class will be briefly introduced to postcolonial theory concerning the abovementioned concepts.

Class and Poverty (OPGIVES)
This course will introduce the students to the themes of Class and Poverty (in England).
it will include
- a brief introduction to the classic, stereotypical class system as seen in the first 20 minutes of the pilot episode of "Downton Abbey"
- the current gap between rich and poor as seen in the ITV documentary "School Swap", episode 2 (public school students study a week in a boarding school)
- the possibilities of social mobility in two videos ("Climbing the Ladder" - news segment and "Who Gets the Best Jobs?" - a documentary. We only saw the first 20 minutes)
- the connection between social mobility and education as presented in the newspaper article "The Glaring Gap"
