Titel 5 Deviants

Why do some people deviate from what is considered “normal behavior”? – and how do we define deviant behavior?

The texts in this course deal with people who are deviant, either by choice or because other people have labelled them so. When analyzing texts, we examine various reasons for people to (want to) deviate from the generally accepted norms and values of society. Two sociological theories will be discussed and drawn in: Durkheim’s Theory of Anomie and Howard Becker’s Labelling Theory.

Students are expected to improve their academic knowledge and skills in terms of:
- Textual analysis (fiction, non-fiction and film)
- Being able to refer to sociological theories in their textual analyses
- Being able to separate fact from opinion
- Being able to compare and contrast different texts and different opinions

Titel 6 Family - for Better or Worse...

How is the relationship between parents and their children portrayed in modern literature? What norms and values do we usually assign to the traditional nuclear family, and what happens if a family does not live up to these? During this course, we look at different child-parent relationships in order to investigate and discuss the meaning of concepts such as family ties and expectations, relationships and conflicts.

This course explores the power and fascination of music and music videos in modern popular culture. Students are introduced to a useful vocabulary for making an analysis and interpretation of different music videos and their corresponding lyrics, focusing in particular on imagery and stylistic as well as cinematic devices.

As a theoretical framework Andrew Goodman’s music video theory will be discussed and drawn in.

Titel 8 The United States Presidential Election 2024

This course explores the use of rhetoric and argumentation in the United States’ Presidential Election 2024 with special emphasis on Democratic and Republican campaign videos. Students will be introduced to the American political system, the Republican and the Democratic parties as well as their respective candidates. Furthermore, students will gain knowledge about the rhetorical pentagon, modes of appeal and argumentation (Toulmin’s model of argumentation as well as argument tricks).

Titel 10 Crime Fiction

The course explores crime fiction by looking at literature, TV and film. Students will acquire knowledge about crime fiction as a genre, focusing in particular on characters and stereotypes, setting and narrative technique.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Account for the typical genre characteristics of crime fiction and comment on the narrative technique using academic terms such as whodunit, howcatchem, narrator and point of view, push/pull effect, suspense, surprise, reveal, red herring.
- Identify and characterise different stereotypes within the genre such as the classic detective who solves murder mysteries based on logic and deduction, the hardboiled American loner fighting injustice and corruption, and the psychologically complex – and often deranged – killer.
- Describe the typical settings of crime fiction and draw parallels between these and the real world

Titel 11 The African-American Experience

During this course, we look African-American conditions of life through an investigation of three important events in American history: the time of slavery, The Civil Rights Movement and today’s Black Lives Matter movement. By reading a variety of genres (fiction, non-fiction and film), we outline some of the conflicts that continue to have an impact on the relationship between Black and White Americans in modern American society.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- account for the development in African-American conditions of life from the time of slavery to modern-day America
- analyse various genres of fiction and non-fiction, using the proper analysis tools
- improve their academic vocabularies by using the course keywords in their proper contexts

Titel 12 Into the Wild

The concept of wilderness has become an essential part of American cultural identity. In this course we examine how the concept of wilderness was defined and interpreted in the USA in the 1800s and trace these ideas in modern American attitudes towards nature. The wilderness theme is studied through several different genres: short story, article, film and pictorial art. The theoretical framework is based on an excerpt from Roderick Nash’s study: Wilderness and the American Mind (1973).

Students are expected to be able to account for Nash’s definition of wilderness as well as to relate the various texts to his ideas.

Titel 13 Urban Life

This course explores the social and human consequences of urban life by looking at the city as a form of mental landscape in which modern man must learn to navigate. Students are introduced to two contrasting approaches to urban life made by sociologists Louis Wirth and Anthony Giddens. The subsequent readings (fiction, non-fiction and film) primarily focus on New York City and London.
By the end of the course students should be able to compare and contrast the sociological theories as well as determine and argue whether a given text reflects the theory of either Wirth or Giddens.

Titel 14 The History of English

English began as the language of one nation, the UK, and it gained importance as the British Empire expanded. Today English serves as a global language, a “lingua franca”, which everybody is expected to know – even in the most remote parts of the world. During this course, students are introduced to the origin and subsequent spread of the English language as we explore the role of English and its varieties today. By the end of the course, students should have developed an understanding of the connection between language and identity.

Titel 17 The British Empire: Colonialism and Beyond

This course provides a general introduction to historical, cultural and social aspects of British imperialism and colonialism. By reading a variety of texts (novel, short story, poetry, essay, short film and speech) we investigate the worldviews of British imperialism while putting these into perspective with more recent post-colonial issues arising in the shadow of the Empire.
