Title:       Unit 1: Introduction to business management

Topics:           1.1 What is a business?
                      1.2 Types of business entities
                      1.3 Business objectives
                      1.4 Stakeholders
                      1.5 Growth and evolution
                      1.6 Multinational companies (MNCs)

Aims/objectives: Students will: (guide)

Overarching goals – The students will:
- apply these tools to cases: SWOT analysis, Ansoff Matrix, STEEPLE analysis, business plan, decision trees, circular business models, Porter’s generic strategies (HL only), simple linear regression (HL only)
- develop an understanding of the different aspects of Business Management as an academic discipline
- explore the connections between individuals, businesses and society


Academic - The students will be able to: (command terms in focus)

o define and explain what is a business.
o compare and contrast the benefits the different types of business entities
o identify and explain the role of different stakeholders
o Compare and contrast the differences between business objectives
o suggest and explain possible growth and evolution approaches for businesses
o discuss the benefits and limitations for multinational corporations

o Communication skills (IB BM guide – Approaches to teaching and learning)
- compose clear and concise analytical responses utilizing the terminology and tools of business, especially in the written assessments.

- Social skills
o Establish trust in the group in order to facilitate mutual support for each other in the learning process.

Assessment/evaluation/reflection:
Quizzes and tests are a mix of multiple choice, short answer, business cases, applying business tools, and short essays

- Explore the role of individuals and the construction of independent legal entities.

CAS:
- Students should reflect on the impact of business on society and the differences between private and public sector companies, cooperatives, non-profit social enterprise, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
