Areas of knowledge - History
Title: History
Topics: Studying history involves exploration and inquiry into the past. This raises questions about whether it is possible to talk meaningfully about a historical fact, or how far we can speak with certainty about anything in the past.
Aims/objectives: Students will: (derived from the IB TOK guide)
- Overarching goals – The students will:
- to engage students with multiple perspectives, foster open-mindedness and develop intercultural understanding
- Academic - The students will be able to: (command terms in focus)
o demonstrate awareness and evaluation of different points of view with focus on primary and secondary sources as well as audiences and intent
o evaluate the reliability of historical evidence, particularly given that historical sources are often incomplete and that different sources can corroborate, complement or contradict each other.
- Personal skills
o Communication skills (derived from the IB TOK – Approaches to teaching and learning)
Developing “critical literacy”—where students analyse and critique texts for assumptions, bias or distortions—by encouraging students to consider questions such as: “what is the purpose of the text?”, “what assumptions are made about perspectives, values, knowledge and beliefs by the author(s)?”, “what has been omitted and why?”, “does the language mask intention?”, “what are the underlying power structures that created the context for the text?”.
- Social skills
o Empathy as a tool in students’ daily lives, as well as, in working with History
For example, ‘historical empathy’ refers to the ability to perceive, emotionally experience, and contextualize a historical figure's lived experience. Historical empathy is important because it puts the past into context we can internalize on a deeper level. (study.com)

They could reflect on whether the term “proof” is used differently in mathematics compared to how it is used in our everyday lives or in other areas of knowledge.

• Knowledge and language
• Knowledge and politics
• Knowledge and religion
• Knowledge and indigenous societies
Every student picks one theme and form groups based on the theme choice. The groups will work on a presentation for the rest of the class that explores knowledge associated with the theme with an emphasis on real world contemporary examples, as well as, the four compulsory elements required in every partof the syllabus: scope, perspectives, methods and tools, and ethics.

Exhibition
This is an internal assessment that is externally moderated by the IB.
It is worth 10 marks or 33.33% of the final grade.
Students are required to create an exhibition that explores how
TOK manifests in the world around us.
For this task, students are required to create an exhibition of three objects that connect to one of the 35 “IA prompts” provided in the guide. The three objects, or images of objects, will have an accompanying written commentary on each object that places it in its real world context.
