Titel 3 Human Anatomy & Physiology

Pre-IB scheme of work NAS module Human Anatomy & Physiology
Time period: 12 weeks (August-November)

Titel: Human Physiology

*AIMS/OBJECTIVES
The overall aim for this module is to introduce pre-IB students to the biology and chemistry IB diploma subject through the context of human physiology. This is both a theoretical and practical course with teacher demonstrations, student led experiments and group work to complement the individual tests, projects and final exam after 12 weeks.

*Essential Ideas:
Human body composition, cellular respiration and energy, muscle and cardiovascular system analysis.
The blood system continuously transports substances to cells and simultaneously collects waste products

*ACADEMICS
(A list of specific subject aims in the topic)
Introduce human anatomy through guess the organ
What is inside a human body? Discussion of body composition data   using the analyzer
Aerobic/Anaerobic Respiration and ATP– pulse rate, blood pressure
after a fitness test
Muscles – independent and dependent variable analysis; Hand grip
strength dynamometer
Human Blood types, blood composition and type distribution;
Measure your own blood type
Cardiovascular system human heart structure, cardiac cycle, blood
vesselss

*SKILLS
(A list of the personal skills focused on in this topic - see ATLs)

Inquirers: Introduce the human body from a personal and global
context
Thinking skills: Laboratory and theory
Risk taking: New situations from example working with blood and
organs
Communication: Listening, presenting, debating
Reflective: evaluation of their own knowledge improvements
Critical thinking (TOK): Our current knowledge is that emotions are
the product of activity in the brain, rather than in the heart. Is
knowledge based on science more valid than knowledge based on
intuition?

*Social skills developed through the following activities:
Pair and group laboratory experiments (4)
Pair posters &/or film on blood diseases
Student group debates on viral pandemics

*STUDY
(A clear description of the material used in this topic, eg books, chapters pages)

*SOURCES
Kapit and Elson: The Anatomy Book
Clegg and Davis: Third Edition Biology, IB diploma

*ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
(A brief description of how the students will be assessed and evaluated in this topic)
3 tests during the 12 weeks and an exam in week 44
Blood disease formative presentation feedback
