Time and Space: A Doll's House (mock IO)
English A: Language and Literature overview
Studies in language and literature is built on the notion of conceptual learning in which students engage with central concepts of the discipline in order to become flexible, critical readers of all types of texts.
Students will learn about the complex and dynamic nature of language and explore both its practical and aesthetic dimensions. They will explore the crucial role language plays in communication, reflecting experience and shaping the world. Students will also learn about their own roles as producers of language and develop their productive skills. Throughout the course, students will explore the various ways in which language choices, text types, literary forms and contextual elements all affect meaning.
Through close analysis of various text types and literary forms, students will consider their own interpretations, as well as the critical perspectives of others, to explore how such positions are shaped by cultural belief systems and to negotiate meanings for texts.
Students will engage in activities that involve them in the process of production and help shape their critical awareness of how texts and their associated visual and audio elements work together to influence the audience/reader and how audiences/readers open up the possibilities of texts. With its focus on a wide variety of communicative acts, the course is meant to develop sensitivity to the foundational nature, and pervasive influence, of language in the world at large.
Time and Space: A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen
Students will explore Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen’s realist play ‘A Doll’s House’.
Students will use this text for their mock individual oral which will take place in December.
Students will analyse this 19th century play critically, exploring themes, authorial craft, messages, context and implications.
Academic Skills:
-Identify and comment on key themes and characters
-Make connections with the time and space (context) of when the play was written and performed
-Identify and comment on the effect of stylistic and dramatic methods
-Comment on different layers of meaning created by the author
-Consider the audience/reader response to events, characters and themes
-Consider authorial intentions and implications
-Consider and explore global issues that are pertinent to the text
-Evaluate how meaning is shaped
-Application of terminology and academic register
Assessment:
Students will be examining key extracts from the text to prepare for the 10 minute individual oral.
The individual oral is worth 30% of the overall English grade.
Critical thinking skills:

Students will explore a range of non literary bodies of work that link to a global issue shared by A Doll’s House.
Students will work in groups and independently to examine how stylistic features are used to convey messages about the intended global issue.
CAS: Students will engage with the UN Sustainable goals as a platform for identifying global issues for the individual oral and this can triangulate with service needs both in school and the local community.
ToK
The theory of knowledge (TOK) course engages students in reflection on the nature of knowledge and on how it is constructed and represented. Studies in language and literature similarly engages students in an exploration of the nature of the human experience and of the ways in which personal views are constructed and communicated. In relating their studies to TOK, students become aware of the fact that although language and literature offer a powerful means of access to knowledge, they are nonetheless a construction rather than a perfectly mimetic representation of life and reality.
