Cells
Sub-Topics
Introduction to Cells, Cell Types and cell specialization
AIMS/OBJECTIVES
The overall aim for this module is to introduce IB students to the biology IB diploma subject and in particular to prepare them with foundation knowledge of the cell, cell types and cell specialization. This is both a theoretical and practical course with teacher demonstrations, student led experiments and group work to complement the individual tests, projects and exam.
Essential Ideas:
A guide to find the answers to
1) What are the common features to all cells and what features differ
2) How is microscopy used to investigate cell structure?
3) How do molecules of lipid and proteins assemble into biological membranes
4) what are the advantages of compartmentalization in cells
5)how are differentiated cells adapted to their function
6) what factors affect the movement of water in and out of the cell
6) how do plant and animal cells
differ in regulation of water movement
ACADEMICS
(A list of some specific subject aims in the topic)
understanding and knowledge of
cells as the basic structural unit of all living organisms
microscopy
common structures in all living organisms
introduction to cell membranes -pro and eukaryote cells
introduction to organelles in pro and eukaryote cells
advantages of compartmentalization in cells
why do cells differentiate
how water move in and out of cells
SKILLS:
-Personal
(A list of the personal skills focused on in this topic - see ATLs)
- Inquirers: Introduce the the cell from a personal context
- Thinking skills: Laboratory and theory
- Risk taking: New situations from example working with cells
- Communication: Listening, presenting, debating
- Reflective: evaluation of their own knowledge improvements
- Critical thinking (TOK): Our current knowledge is that emotions are the product of activity in the brain, rather than in the heart. Is knowledge based on science more valid than knowledge based on intuition?
-Social skills developed through the following activities:
- Pair and group laboratory experiments
- Pair posters &/or film on cells
- Student group debates on stem cells

Water, Organic Molecules and Carbohydrates
AIMS/OBJECTIVES
The overall aim for this module is to introduce IB students to the biology IB diploma subject and in particular to prepare them with foundation knowledge of water, organic molecules and carbohydrates. This is both a theoretical and practical course with teacher demonstrations, student led experiments and group work to complement the individual tests, projects and exam.
Essential Ideas:
A guide to find the answers in
1) what physical and chemical properties of water make it essential for life
2) how does the structure of nucleic acids allow hereditary information to be stored
3) In what ways do variations in form allow diversity of function in carbohydrates and lipids
4) what is the relationship between amino acids sequence and the diversity in form and function of proteins
ACADEMICS
(A list of some specific subject aims in the topic)
Water:
Water as medium for life, hydrogen bonds and their nature
Cohesion, adhesion -what’s the difference
Physical properties of water and its impact on life
DNA:
DNA as a genetic material in all living organisms
Nucleotides
DNA structure and function
Complementary base pairing
Hershey and Chase experiment
Carbohydrates and lipids:
Chemical properties of carbon atom allowing for the formation of diverse compounds
Formation of macromolecules by condensation
Form and function of monosaccharides
Hydrophobic properties of lipids
Formation of phospholipid bilayers
Proteins:
Amino acids
Chemical diversity in the R-group of amino acids
Different structure in proteins
