Titel 1 History: The Russian Revolution

Title: The Russian Revolution and its aftermath
Topics:

Aims/objectives: Students will: (IB History guide)

Overarching goals – The students will:
- develop an understanding of history as a discipline
- develop historical consciousness including a sense of chronology and context
- develop an understanding of different historical perspectives
- develop key historical skills with focus on engaging effectively with sources.

Academic - The students will be able to: (command terms in focus)

o Analyze the suitability and value of source material especially the difference between primary and secondary sources.
o Identify the differences between the social classes and their conflicts in pre-communist Russia.
o Examine the strengths and weaknesses of Nicholas II’s rule.
o Compare and contrast the differences between Bolsheviks and Mensheviks
o Discuss the difference between Marxism and Leninism and capitalism
o Identify the difficulties in establishing new forms of governance and the rise of authoritarianism in Cold War Russia
o Identify the forces behind detente, perestroika, and glasnost

o Communication skills (IB History ATL – Approaches to teaching and learning)
- Contextualize historical sources from a variety of media, including: visual sources, speeches, interviews, and maps to help develop skills such as visual literacy
- Develope essay writing skills that are central to success in the DP history course—activities could include: work on essay planning, paragraph structuring, introduction writing, conclusion writing, and using supporting evidence

Assessment/evaluation/reflection:
Quizzes and tests are a mix of multiple choice, short answer, source analysis, and short essay
- Quiz: Causes leading up to the Russian Revolution
- Quiz: The Revolution and the rise of Stalin
- Test: Entire unit with emphasis on the post-Stalinism years

Cross-curricular:
- The Film class will investigate film making in 20thC Russia
- The English class will read One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Animal Farm by George Orwell.

TOK: (IB History guide)
- What methods do historians use to gain knowledge?
- To what extent does studying history help us to better understand ourselves in the present?

CAS:
- Students should research how communist ideology and authoritarianism has influenced Romania and Habitat for Humanity’s work there in Romania in preparation for the 2g study-trip.

The students will write a short 'extended essay' within the social sciences.
Focus will be on how to do research in preparation for the IBDP Extended Essay.
We will work with referencing and citation techniques, as well as, identifying academic resource material.
