The American Dream
Der tages udgangspunkt i elevernes forforståelse med efterfølgende informationssøgning til quizzen ”The USA and Me” i Finderup & Fog: Worlds of English.
Der introduceres desuden til The Frontier ved at læse The Frontier Heritage by Edward N. Kearny, 1984.
Fra bogen Your Society læser vi ”Call Me Arnold” og Kurt Vonneguts novelle ”The Package”. Der arbejdes desuden med en dokumentarfilm The Death of the American Dream?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0y-SWdbGRk

The Curious Incident... and Narrative Style
In this course we have worked with the novel 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time'. The major part of the course was spent reading the 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time' and discussing what issues the main character suffers from and how they impact his interactions with the world and are reflected in the style of writing/composition of the novel.
In addition to this, we also examined other texts in which mental issues played a role and affected the narrative style.
The students were introduced to analytical concepts such as narrative style, types of narration, reliable/unreliable narrators and foreshadowing.
Core texts (kernestof):
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon
- This Is All Mostly true, Kathy Stevens
- To Siri, With Love (2014), New York Times, Judith Newman

US Election and Immigration (SRO) (E)
In this course, we began by focusing on US politics and the 2024 election. We started out by analysing election videos from both Democrats and Republicans both in terms of the topics they focus on and their use of rhetorical strategies. Afterwards, we examined what characterised the average Democrat and Republican voter. The students also researched the reasons behind Donald Trump’s eventual victory.
The course then changed its focus to the topic "Immigration from Latin America to the US", which served as preparation for their SRO. In doing so, we read about the push and pull factors that motivate Latin Americans to travel to the US and examined an example of how Donald Trump rhetorically labels these immigrants in his speeches.
In their work with their SRO the students have worked a variety of different texts relating to the topic of immigration from Latin America to the US.
Core texts (kernestof):
- Election Year - US Immigration. From "Election Year" by Lotte Genefke et al., pp 165-168

Animal Farm and the Power of Words (E)
Animal Farm and the Power of Words
In this course we did an in-depth analysis of George Orwell's Animal Farm. We explored the themes and symbolism of the novel, and why it can be considered an allegory. In our discussion of its symbolism we examined the connection to the Soviet Union under communist rule. Time was also spent considering the novel's relevance to contemporary political issues specifically focusing on the parallels to what has happened in the US in the past years. Lastly, we also discussed to what extent this text can be considered dystopian.

Africa, Empire and Beyond (E)
In this course we read a variety of texts dealing with the British Empire and its legacy. We focus on texts which show the relationship between coloniser and colonised, how the British colonisers saw themselves and the impact of the British Empire, including the role it played in the spread of English as a global language/Lingua Franca. In addition to this, we also study examples of literature from African and by African writers to exemplify how the relationship with Britain impacted their society, culture and sense of self. In order to gain a modern perspective on how Britain's past as an empire still plays a role today, we also studied the reasons behind Brexit.
The majority of the text material below can be found in the document "Africa, Empire and Beyond".
