Our topic is the fantasy genre and the creatures found in this wonderful genre. The main focus is literary analysis with emphasis on understanding the magical creatures as reflections of the modern world and society. Our objective is to read and analyse novels, movies, and more covering three different "magical" creatures; Werewolves, vampires and zombies.
Distorted Mirrors is our main reading material. In it we have read about the history and main features of each genre, and literary criticisms focusing on feminist and queer theory. (ca. 35 s)

Conspiracy theories
A course on the topic of conspiracy theories. The aim was to examine what defines a conspiracy theory and what makes people believe them. These terms have been central in our attempt to understand what drives a conspiracy theory: confirmation bias, coping mechanism, heuristics, pattern-seeking behaviour, paranoia, cherry-picking of evidence, asymmetry of information.
Core texts:
- Conspiracy theories - definition and chart (See document "The Conspiracy Chart and its creater...")
- Why Do We Fall For Conspiracy Theories, Akash Peshin
- The Eyes Have It, Philip K. Dick
The students also did group presentations on various conspiracy theories:

Animal farm and dystopian reality
In this course we do an in-depth analysis of George Orwell's Animal Farm. We explore the themes and symbolism of the novel, and why it can be considered an allegory. In our discussion of its symbolism we examined the connection to the Soviet Union under communist rule. Time was also spent considering the novel's relevance to contemporary political issues specifically focusing on the parallels to what has happened in the US in the past years. We also read a short excerpt from Orwell's 1984 with the purpose of understanding how the themes in this novel also can be applied to our modern society. Lastly, we also discussed to what extent these texts can be considered dystopian.
Core texts (kernestof):
- Animal Farm, George Orwell
- 1984 (excerpt from chapter 1), George Orwell
- In our Orwellian reality, reach for 'Animal Farm' with your '1984':
