-
Ordbogen.com
- Merriam-Webster (amerikansk-engelsk ordborg):
https://www.merriam-webster.com/
- Oxford Learner's Dictionary (britisk-engelsk ordbog):
https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/
- Synonymordbog:
https://www.thesaurus.com/
- Minlæring:
https://www.minlaering.dk/
- Jonna Engberg-Pedersen m.fl.: Toolbox Gyldendal 2016.

Sustainability
Our first theme is about sustainability - which is now a part of NGH's vision. After a general introduction, we will focus on lifestyle examples that relate directly to our everyday lives, for example sneakers (BBC: Killer Kicks). Of course, sustainability and climate change cannot be totally separated, and the approach that we will take here means that the overall debate about climate change will be downprioritised. However, we will use Carl Sagan's famous "Pale Blue Dot" (1994) as a perspective on human behaviour and human fragility, and we will finish the theme with Roland Emmerich's "The Day after Tomorrow" (2004) as an example of a different interpretation of the changing climate.
In general, the theme is aimed at facilitating the ability to discuss - and to listen to other opinions - in a new class environment.
Grammatisk fokus: Screening.

Sex and Gender (eksamen)
This theme, like the previous one, is aimed at facilitating the ability to discuss - and to listen to other opinions - in a class environment which is still relatively new.
What does "sex" mean? What does "gender" mean? Questions like these should spark discussions about modern gender roles and gender stereotypes, and through a number of texts we will take a look at the way gender roles are developing these days. For the sake of perspective we will also include a few older texts, e.g. Hemingway's "Cat in the Rain" (1925) and the Betty Boop cartoon "The Old Man of the Mountain" (1933).
At the end we will watch David Fincher's film "Fight Club" (1998) as an example of "toxic masculinity".
Desuden do-omskrivning.

Speculative Fiction: Sci-Fi
Science fiction will be our first genre theme. What exactly is the meaning of sci-fi and what does "speculative" mean? In which ways is it different from fantasy as a genre (also speculative), and why and how is it relevant for us today?
We will go into space in Frederic Brown's "Answer" (1954) and into parallel worlds with Marc Daniels in an episode from "Star Trek": "Mirror, Mirror" (1967). We will read the chapter "The Wood Between the Worlds" from C.S. Lewis' fantasy novel "The Magician's Nephew" (1955) to compare sci-fi and fantasy and to look at older ideas of parallel worlds. Briefly, we will take a look at the Schrödinger´s Cat experiment to investigate (some of) the philosophy behind parallel worlds.
Obviously, this is a theme that must include AI...

Civil Rights (eksamen)
It's election year, and a lot has happened in the US over the summer of 2024. We will begin this semester with a theme about civil rights in the US. An important aspect of this is "national values" - so which values are typical American? Donna Fargo's "US of A" (1974) will be a starting point from which we will briefly look to the Founding Fathers and their famous words "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" (1776). Who was excluded from this, and how is it visible to this day? This will lead us to the Civil Rights Movement from the 1960s, and we will read excerpts from Martin Luther King's famous speech "I Have a Dream" (1963) and Malcolm X's "The Ballot and the Bullet" (1964). A focal point will be analysis of arguments - which will serve as a bridge to our debating theme.
Kendrick Lamar's "Alright" (2015) - video and lyrics - will be used as a more recent example, and we will conclude this part of US civil rights problems with a group work on police brutality.
Grammatisk fokus: Adverbier - senere relative pronomener.

Debating - an introduction
What is debating? It is a format designed to teach young people to engage in a democratic exchange of views and opinions by enabling them to think and respond fast and by enabling them to convince others about their ideas.
This course is inspired by the ESU-debating format which formed the basis of NGH's English Masterclass until a couple of years ago. Here, students get the opportunity to debate a number of motions produced by teachers and students - some of them produced by 2e.
Key concepts are:
- Definitions/analysis
- Ranking of arguments
- PEEL
- Rebuttals
- POIs (points of interest)
- fallacies (flawed arguments)
Ultimately, the aim of the course is to support analytical work with speeches and similar texts.
At the end of it all, we will organise a debate with 2i.

Horror in Fiction and Film (eksamen)
Horror is our main genre theme (the other one is sci-fi). We will start off by seing a couple of simple and short (amateur) films to investigate basic effects in the horror genre, supported by examples in music and music videos. Later we will look at the roots of the genre, using Edgar Allan Poe ("The Tell-Tale Heart", 1843) as an example. We will also study excerpts from Bram Stoker's "Dracula" (1897). Here, the Victorian period and relevant elements from the literary history of the age will be included. Stephen King's "The Boogeyman" (1978) is a central text, which we will interpret from a psychological angle, and at the end of the theme, we will analyse and discuss a modern, quite sophisticated, horror film to see the full effect of various genre traits.

Skriveworkshop

The UK: From "Cool Britannia" to Brexit (eksamen)
This theme - quite long - will take us through recent developments in UK society. A focal point will be identity. After a short introduction to the four countries of the UK and the different flags as national symbols, we will begin in the "Cool Britannia" of the 1990s with the country's shift from traditional ideas of "hard power" to a significant "soft power" ideal through culture. We will analyse examples of music and music videos, and central texts are Robin Cook's "Chicken Tikka Masala" speech (2001) and Ranbir Sahota's "Chameleon" (2003). Later, we will look at Brexit and consequences of Brexit in relation to identity. We will study debates about Brexit through Enid Blyton's "Five on Brexit Island" (Bruno Vincent, 2016) . We will follow the connection between notions of World War II heroism and a post-Brexit identity, using Christopher Nolan's film "Dunkirk" (2017) as an example (even though Nolan has denied the connection). And at the end of the theme: Where do we find the UK right now? With this question in mind, we will analyse and discuss the TLDR News video "Why the UK Is Doing Better Than You Think" (2025) from a (very) critical angle.

Dystopia (eksamen)
This theme - Dystopia - will include three major literary works: Shakespeare's tragedy "Macbeth" (ca. 1606), Suzanne Collins's novel "The Hunger Games" (book one from 2008), and Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" (1949).
We will cover Shakespeare by focusing on the early scenes with the three witches and Macbeth's transformation (supported by Justion Kurzel's film version from 2015). We will read the scenes from "Macbeth" with a definition of dystopia in mind. The Tudors and Elizabeth I's reign should give us an overview of certain developments in the English Renaissance, or the Golden Age.
"The Hunger Games" is our "værklæsning". Our reading of the novel will focus on American (frontier) values that Katniss Everdeen seems to embody - and how these ideals and values ultimately undermine the tyrannical rule of Panem. Jackson's text, "The Lottery", will provide a perspective on all this. We will focus on parallels and differences to "The Hunger Games" in terms of dystopia.

Titel 11
Narrating India (eksamen)
It has to be said: This final theme will be very short. But there will be an introduction to a couple of aspects of modern India.
Key words are "ambition" and "urbanization" in relation to an excerpt from Mohsin Hamid's novel "How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia" (2013). The work with this text will be include an oral presentation as a kind of exam exercise (some students will present their work in class; others will hand in an individual recording of their work). We will briefly cover independence and the partition of India through Jawarharlal Nehru's speech "A Tryst with Destiny" (1947). Finally a reading of Khuswant Singh's classic short story "The Mark of Vishnu" (1983) will provide a certain insight into spirituality and tradition in India. A focal point here will also be the narrative point of view.
Notice: Since the theme is so short, the students are also allowed to include relevant texts from the UK theme as a perspective in an exam situation.
