-
Ordbogen.com
- Merriam-Webster (amerikansk-engelsk ordborg):
https://www.merriam-webster.com/
- Oxford Learner's Dictionary (britisk-engelsk ordbog):
https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/
- Synonymordbog:
https://www.thesaurus.com/
- Minlæring:
https://www.minlaering.dk/
- Jonna Engberg-Pedersen m.fl.: Toolbox Gyldendal 2016.

Titel 2
Sustainability
Our first theme is about sustainability - which is now a part of NGH's vision. After a general introduction, we will focus on lifestyle examples that relate directly to our everyday lives, for example sneakers (BBC: Killer Kicks). Of course, sustainability and climate change cannot be totally separated, and the approach that we will take here means that the overall debate about climate change will be downprioritised. Instead, we will use Carl Sagan's famous "Pale Blue Dot" (1994) as a perspective on human behaviour and human fragility.
In general, the theme is aimed at facilitating the ability to discuss - and to listen to other opinions - in a new class environment.
Grammatisk fokus: Screening. Dernæst: Do-omskrivning.

Sex and Gender (eksamen)
This theme, like the previous one, is aimed at facilitating the ability to discuss - and to listen to other opinions - in a class environment which is still relatively new.
What does "sex" mean? What does "gender" mean? Questions like these should spark discussions about modern gender roles and gender stereotypes, and through a number of texts we will take a look at the way gender roles are developing these days. For the sake of perspective we will also include a few older texts, e.g. Hemingway's "Cat in the Rain" (1925) and the Betty Boop cartoon "The Old Man of the Mountain" (1933).
Grammatisk fokus: Verbets tider og udvidet tid.

Modern Horror Stories
"Horror stories" will be our first genre course. Why do we (some of us) like to get scared, and what constitutes a horror story? We will discuss the horror elements in short stories, songs and short films. The texts and materials included here are all (relatively) modern, but we will point to older traditions where it is possible.

Titel 5
Speculative Fiction: Sci-Fi (eksamen)
This is our second genre theme. The title is Speculative Fiction which will allow certain comparisons with fantasy and horror, but overall this is a theme about science fiction: How can sci-fi be defined as a genre, and what can we say about its origin? We will begin with Frederic Brown's short text, "Answer" (1954), and then move on to parallel worlds in the Star Trek episode "Mirror Mirror" (1967) and in Ted Chiang's "Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom" (2019). We will also work with Ridley Scott's Film "The Martian" (2015) - at which point we will include the Robinsonade as a concept. Scott's positive take on the genre will form a bridge and a contrast to Suzanne Collins's "The Hunger Games" (book 1 - 2008).
Although listed below as a separate theme, Collins' novel ("værklæsning") is also part of this theme.

Reading a novel: The Hunger Games (eksamen)
Suzanne Collins's "The Hunger Games" (book one from 2008) is our "værklæsning". We will be reading the novel in continuation of the sci-fi theme, so that the students can refer to genre relevant concepts and ideas. Here, a particular focal point will be dystopia and dystopian traits in the novel. We will include Gary Ross' film version (2008) and study parallels and differences between book and film. We will (very) briefly work with intertextuality in film excerpts to see how The Hunger Games film may have been inspired by earlier dystopian films, e.g. "The Running Man" (1987), and how The Hunger Games film may have been an inspiration for others, e.g. "Divergent" (2014).
Along the way - while the class must cover larger portions of the novel at home - we will take a look at some of the basic American values and follow developments in the 2024 US election.
Grammatisk fokus: Adverbier (fortsat).

Debating - an introduction
What is debating? It is a format designed to teach young people to engage in a democratic exchange of views and opinions by enabling them to think and respond fast and by enabling them to convince others about their ideas.
This course is inspired by the ESU-debating format which formed the basis of NGH's English Masterclass until a couple of years ago. Here, students get the opportunity to debate a number of motions produced by teachers and students - some of them produced by 2i.
Key concepts are:
- Definitions/analysis
- Ranking of arguments
- PEEL
- Rebuttals
- POIs (points of interest)
Ultimately, the aim of the course is to support analytical work with speeches and similar texts.
At the end of it all, we will organise a debate with 2e. At 2 April, 2025, the class will participate in a debating cup at Herlufsholm with Nørre G and Herlufsholm. On various occasions, we will revisit the debating format to keep it alive.
Grammatisk fokus: Register (expressions that are valuable in a debate - and expressions you should avoid).

American Values - for whom? (eksamen)
The work with The Hunger Games provided an overall view of (certain) basic American values. This theme will offer a broader perspective on the historical origin of these (and other) values. Who were the Founding Fathers, and what sort of America did they imagine? We will, of course, look at the famous excerpt from the Declaration of Independence (1776), but quickly go west with Vittwia Mickelson to see the "real" frontier and westward expansion from a woman's perspective ("Oregon Journal", 1924). We will also include Edward Kearney's take on "The Frontier Heritage" (1984). A couple of additional materials will be discussed (briefly).
We will end this theme with a written (exam) assignment on Mary Annette Pember's "Death by Civilization" (2019).

The UK: From "Cool Britannia" to Brexit (eksamen)

A-opgaven er: Andrea Carter: The Lamb (2019). B-opgaven er: Kevin Love: "Everybody Is Going Through Something", 2018).

The Man of Steel
Imagine that Superman were real. How would we respond to a being with superhuman powers? Superman would probably find it hard to please everybody: What may seem good to one person, may be quite the opposite in the eyes of someone else. So on whose authority should he act? And ultimately: What does Superman have to offer our modern world?
We will start this semester by going to the cinema and watch the new Superman movie from James Gunn (2025). By exploring angles like the ones above, we will compare Gunn's Superman to (examples of) previous interpretations of The Man of Steel. We will look at his origin in the USA of the 1930s and the hopes and dreams that he carried with him then and see how (some of) this has developed over the years.
This year's first assignment will be group presentations of articles about the relevance of Superman in 2025.

Aspects of India (eksamen)
This theme about India will focus on various aspects of the country and its culture. We will begin with colourism as an example of cultural notions that may seem curious to us - at least until we take a closer look at ourselves. A written assignment will be part of this aspect, based on Neha Dixit's article "Fair, But Not So Lovely" (2019). Another aspect is independence and the partition of India. The colonial past is not a focal point in our work, but R.K. Narayan's "The Blind Dog" (1943) will be interpreted as an allegory of colonial India. The reading of this text will overlap with the beginning of the SRP-period, so historical criticism is going to be an important approach to Narayan. Yet another aspect is poverty, and "The Blind Dog" will serve as a bridge to this. We will include an excerpt from Aravind Adiga's "The White Tiger" (2008) as an example of the ambition to escape poverty in modern India. At this point, we can produce an SRP-problem statement, using historical criticism and "The White Tiger". A film analysis of Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008) will also form a perspective on poverty and ways out of poverty. Finally, Khushwant Singh's classic story "The Mark of Vishnu" (1983) will offer an opportunity to look at spirituality and tradition as aspects of India, including the caste system and a (very) short introduction to Hinduism.
In an exam situation, students are expected to choose one or two relevant apects of India as a perspective, not all of them.

Love Stories (eksamen)
Our last theme focuses on love and love stories from two (three) major literary periods: The Renaissance and the Victorian Age (UK) and the Progressive Era (US). The first period will cover Shakespeare. We will work with "Sonnet 18" (1609) and with the Balcony Scene from "Romeo and Juliet" (ca. 1597) and then take a short detour to "Macbeth" (ca. 1606) to cover The Great Chain of Being. Christopher Marlowe's "The Passionate Shepherd" (1599) and Sir Walter Raleigh's "The Nymp's Reply to the Shepherd" (1600) are also important to our work with the Renaissance. Key words and concepts are sonnet, the Golden Age, pastoral and Arcadia.
In the second round we will look at parallels and differences between the Victorian Age and the Progressive Era. An excerpt from George Bernard Shaw's "Mrs Warren's Profession" (1894) will serve as an example of norms in the Victorian Period, and Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" (1894) will be an example of "bourgeois love" from the Progressive Era. Key concepts are domesticity and (to som extent) hysteria, prostitution and choice.
