Titel 1 Growing up: A course in how to read literature

What does it mean to grow up? To develop or transition from child to adult. To develop into a mature person, biologically and mentally. This is something that we all go through, and it’s tough – for some much tougher than for others.

In reading these stories about young people that experience growing up, we explore first-hand how literature (fiction) can help us get perspective on and understand (other) human experiences.

The theme is an introductory course in how to read literature in English class. We will learn what it means to analyze and interpret a text, focusing on narrator, characters and character development, atmosphere/mood, and symbolism. We'll also analyze our first short film.

Core texts
Julia Green (2004), "Will's Story"
Penelope Lively (1986), "Clara's Day"
Charles Bukowski (1982), "Son of Satan"
Lucy Caldwell (2013), "Through the Wardrobe"
Drew Van Steenbergen (2014), "Alone With People" (short film)

We have "small talk" conversations in pairs with the teacher throughout the theme.

Grammatik: Verber, kongruens, punktum og komma + bindeord ml. helsætninger, verbets tider, regelmæssige og uregelmæssige verber.

Titel 2 Dreaming big in the US (Exam)

The aftermath of the 2024 US election is a great opportunity for us to learn about American history, society and culture.

This theme gives the students a basic introduction to American culture, values, and beliefs. We will start off by taking a historical approach at the development of the values and beliefs that are central to American culture, and then we will look at how these values and beliefs are practiced in the lives of different Americans up to the present – from their relationship to guns to their big dream and many things in between.

Focus points:
- The American Dream
- The six basic American values
- Frontier myths and ideals
- Immigrating to the USA
- Americans and their guns
- Success stories and harsh realities

In this theme we will continue to read and work with fiction, but we'll also move on to non-fiction texts and how we read and use these to gain knowledge and perspective in English class. Additionally, we'll make our first acquaintance with poetry analysis.

Grammatik: Do-omskrivning, ordstilling, substantiver, proprier og retskrivningsregler, substantivers bøjning i flertal (inkl. logisk flertal og utællelige substantiver).

- Texting, a new type of language
- How the internet has conquered the world: Can we live without it now?
- Pros and cons of social media in our postmodern world
- Science fiction as literary genre
- Chapter 1 of George Orwell’s 1948 dystopian science fiction novel 1984
- Big tech, surveillance, privacy, and anonymity online

Titel 4 LSO: Kortfilm

Omfang: s. 6 sider. Læs mere her: https://statsskolen.dk/elevintra/lso/.

Kortfilm
-       Richard Raskins parametre for kortfilm
-       Filmiske virkemidler

-      Alyssa McClelland (2018), "Second Best" (20 min.)
-      Winter Dunn (2022), ”Dear Mama…” (14 min.)

Titel 5 Building walls (Berlin study trip)

This theme centers on the barriers – walls, fences, and borders – that people set up amongst themselves. Why do people build walls? What are their purposes? What is the cost?

Taking our starting point in Robert Frost’s poem “Mending Wall” and American gated communities, we’ll investigate why people build walls in their local communities.

We’ll then look at border walls in America and in Berlin to investigate how walls keep people apart – not just physically but mentally.

During our text work we will also see how walls can be metaphorical, and this is also something that comes up in the iconic presidential speeches given in Berlin on the wall. We'll analyze a couple of these speeches to see how the Berlin wall is portrayed by American presidents during the Cold War.

Berlin is the destination of a one-week study trip in early fall during which the students experience the remains of the Berlin Wall and its enduring legacy for themselves.

Estimeret omfang: 35 s.

Grammatik: konjunktioner og sætningstyper, relative pronominer og komma.

Titel 6 Horror (Exam)

This theme focuses on the genre of horror fiction in literature and film. We’ll take our starting point in Stephen King’s writings on the genre and how it works to draw us in (genre traits), including the three levels of scare: Terror, Horror, and the Gross-Out. We'll also be informed by horror scholar Mathias Clasen, including his two categories of supernatural and psychological horror.

We’ll then read short stories and watch short films that exemplify these different types of horror fiction and help us examine:
- HOW horror fiction draws the reader or audience in, i.e., what literary devices or cinematic techniques are used to create the effect of horror?
- WHY are we so drawn to horror fiction?

Grammatik: Komma, præpositioner, ordstilling, assignments 1-5.

Titel 7 Tough Times in the UK (Wish List) (Exam)

This theme is called “Tough Times in the UK” and is about the growing poverty rates and problems of social inequality and social mobility in the UK.

We’ll read and watch both non-fiction and fiction to learn about:
- The social class structure of society, then and now
- Social inequality in education and employment
- Growing poverty rates in the UK today, including the cost-of-living crisis
- What poverty actually looks like, and how people view and talk about the poor

As part of our text work, we’ll read a play, Wish List (2015), by the young British writer Katrine Soper, that illustrates some of the core problems about poverty, social inequality and social mobility in the UK. The play is about a young woman who is struggling to support herself and her brother in a system that is stacked against her. Our analysis will focus on characterization, setting, atmosphere, and themes, as we’ll relate the fictional struggles of these young people to what is going on in UK society today.

Titel 8 Jamaica - and its ties to the UK (Exam)

Today, Great Britain is known for its multicultural society, and a major reason why is the nation’s history as a colonial superpower, an Empire. Looking at the Black British community, there is an unspoken divide between those with African and those with African-Caribbean ancestry – What is this about? What characterizes African-Caribbean culture and sets it apart?

To better understand the position of the British African-Caribbean community, we travel across the Atlantic Ocean to the island of Jamaica – the world’s third largest Anglophone country.

We’ll be working with:
- Black Caribbeans in the UK (Windrush)
- Jamaica’s history as a colony of the British Empire,
- its blended/composite people and culture,
- their relationship to the English language.

Part of the theme will examine English as a global language in the world, and here we’ll take our starting point in Kachru’s model “Three circles of English” and the relationship between these, as seen in Jamaica.
