Titel 1 The American Dream

"The American Dream" har fokus på at give indblik i den amerikanske drøm, og hvordan den har udviklet sig historisk og aktuelt for forskellige grupper af amerikanere. Eleverne skal arbejde med 'Den amerikanske drøm' gennem læsning og analyse af tekster, taler og film, som tilsammen giver forskellige perspektiver på den amerikanske drøm. Således får eleverne basisviden om amerikanske værdier og landets historie, herunder borgerrettighedsbevægelsen, og den nuværende Black Lives Matter-bevægelse.

Titel 2 Fantasy Literature

In this course we will work with the fantasy genre in British and American literature. We will read extracts from literary fantasy classics and through analysis and interpretation of these extracts, the students will we able to determine characteristic fantasy traits.

We will work with the following terms:
• Typical fantasy setting (parallel world, secondary world, co-existing world)
• The typical fantasy hero/heroine
• The typical fantasy gallery of beings (other characters than the hero/heroine (good guys vs. badguys, helpers, the vise sage, the enemy)
• The typical structure/composition of fantasy stories (conflict – point of no return – quest – happyending)
• Magical inventory

The used terminology is from ”Worlds of Fantasy”, Anne Mette Finderup og Agnete Fog, Systime 2005. The goal is that working with the genre will help the students to improve their analysis and interpretation skills in relation to text analysis.

Titel 3 Multicultural Britain

The focus of the course is Multicultural Britain in the 21st century. We will work with the background for Britain being multicultural, but mostly the course will focus on the opportunities and challenges which the multicultural society in Britain faces today. Focus will be on integration - both from a political perspective but also from the perspective of an individual with another ethnic background.

Titel 4 Dystopian Worlds

The purpose of this theme is to get an insight into different dystopian characteristics and learning how to identify these characteristics and interpret the stories as allegories of relevant problems and challenges in society in the 20th and 21st centuries.
We will read stories dealing with some type of dystopian world / society.
We will also be working with the film "The Hunger Games", in which dystopian characteristics can be seen clearly. This course will also include reading George Orwell's dystopian novel "Animal Farm".

Important terms: Dystopia, utopia, types of dystopian control (corporate control, bureaucratic control, technological control, philosophical/religious control), the dystopian protagonist, propaganda, restrictions of information, independent thought, and freedom, surveillance, illusions of the perfect utopian world.

Titel 5 WW1 - SRO-forløb

This course focuses on Great Britain's involvement in the First World War and how the war affected both the soldiers but also people and society back home.
The course is an interdisciplinary course (together with history) as it is the course which the SRO is based on.

Titel 6 South Africa

This course deals for the most part with the post-apartheid era. The goal is for the students to be able to understand, explain and analyse conflicts and controversies in the society of South Africa and put them into perspective to the time of the apartheid and the development of the SouthAfrican society since its end.

Titel 8 Love

This theme focusses on the concept of love through different literary periods from Shakespeare's sonnets in the Renaissance to Sally Rooney's modern portrayal of love in the novel "Normal People". We have worked with different kinds of love and the obstacles love faces in different time periods. In relation to the Renaissance and the Victorian Era, the students have also read some background knowledge in relation to the historical periods.

Titel 11 Hemingway

In this course you will work with the American writer Ernest Hemingway. You will read some ofHemingway's short stories and learn about the characteristic Hemingway traits, among which we find the 'iceberg technique'. We will analyse some of the very interesting themes Hemingway works with - for example war, masculinity, death, existentialism, and Hemingway's idea about'nada'/'nothingness' which is clear in the term 'Code Hero'. You will also focus on Hemingway's own war participation and war experiences, further reducing his faith in ideals of honour, glory, religion and institutions and the negative consequences of war on human beings.
