Postmodernism
Postmodernism is the age where values and truths become relative. After the world has experienced several wars, terrorist attacks, tried to grasp the atrocity of holocaust and cope with a pandemic, the only way to face a world of instability, coincidence and apparent meaninglessness is with irony and playfulness.
In such a reality of growing complexity and loss of a fixed picture of the world, Postmodern writers increasingly turn to the use of experiment, parody, fragmentation, pastiche, metafiction and intertextuality in their texts to portray the complexity and chaos of Postmodern life. This course deals with exactly that and focuses on Anglophone writers of Postmodernism but also the historical development and significant trends of the age. Moreover, the course focuses on the effects of multiple destructive wars, youth rebellions and counter cultures, growing economic prosperity and the impacts of globalization and information technology – and not least on the individual who seems to have lost its core. In this course, the students will also gain a vocabulary and a theoretical framework to qualify their work with the analysis and interpretation of the texts included.

the grammar, pronunciation, orthography, and punctuation of the English language
vocabulary, including word formation and idioms
language learning and communication strategies
principles of text structure and textual coherence

American Modernism - Of Mice and Men
This course deals with the American modernist author John Steinbeck's novella "Of Mice and Men" (1937). Modernism (1901-1939) emerged in a time of both crisis and development. Primarily, the Modernist project in the interwar period was an attempt to adapt art to resemble the changing world around the artists. In order for them to do this, they needed new methods and techniques. Modernist artists expressed themselves in numerous ways, and due to this there was massive deviation in form and content among them. The motto of the Modernist Era can be summarized in the American poet Ezra Pound's exhortation "Make it new!" In here was a call to modernize, to remake and break with the past in order to depict the experience of living in the 20th century. Parts of American modernism are characterized by depicting human suffering and hope, taking a social realist view on marginalized groups. For the artists this became a way of dealing with the existential alienation and disillusionment of the interwar period. In many ways, Steinbeck's writing is the essence of American Modernism; realistically portraying ordinary people with lack of opportunity exposed to exploitation and consequently suffering defeat. For many of the characters in Steinbeck's stories The American Dream is out of reach.
