Beskrivelse af de enkelte undervisningsforløb (1 skema for hvert forløb)
Titel 1 Introduction & Research Methods

Unit: Introduction to Psychology and Research Methods
Overview:
The course begins with an introduction to the key materials, structure, and expectations of IB Psychology. Students will gain an understanding of the aims of the course, core topics, and assessment components. The first major focus is on how psychological knowledge is generated: students will explore the fundamental principles of research methods in psychology, including experimental design, sampling techniques, ethical considerations, and data analysis. This foundation is essential for developing the critical thinking skills needed to evaluate theories, models, and studies throughout the course. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the strengths and limitations of various research approaches and to begin considering the role of ethics in psychological inquiry.

Links to ATL Skills:

Research skills: Understanding how to conduct and evaluate psychological research.

Thinking skills: Developing critical awareness of methodological strengths and limitations.

Communication skills: Using appropriate terminology to describe research processes and findings.

Links to TOK:

What makes psychological knowledge credible or trustworthy?

How do ethical considerations shape the production of knowledge in psychology?

In what ways does the methodology used affect the interpretation of research findings?

Titel 2 Biological approach to understanding behaviour

Unit: Biological Level of Analysis
Overview:
In this unit, students explore how biological factors influence human behavior. Topics include the role of the brain and nervous system, neurotransmitters and hormones, genetics, and the evolutionary origins of behavior. Through the study of key theories and empirical research, students examine the complex interactions between biological processes and psychological functioning. The unit emphasizes the development of critical thinking in evaluating biological explanations and considers both the strengths and limitations of biological approaches in understanding human behavior.

Links to ATL Skills:

Thinking skills: Analyzing and evaluating biological explanations of behavior; considering multiple perspectives.

Research skills: Interpreting data from biological studies; understanding the use of different methodologies in biological psychology.

Links to TOK:

To what extent can human behavior be explained biologically?

What are the ethical implications of biological research on human behavior?

How do technological advances shape the production of knowledge in biological psychology?

Titel 3 Cognitive approach to understanding behaviour

Unit: Cognitive Level of Analysis
Overview:
This unit examines how mental processes such as perception, memory, thinking, and decision-making influence human behavior. Students will explore key models of cognitive processes and evaluate empirical research in areas such as reconstructive memory, dual-process thinking, and cognitive biases. The unit also addresses the reliability of cognitive processes and the interaction between cognition and emotion. Through critical engagement with theory and research, students will develop an appreciation for both the contributions and limitations of cognitive psychology in explaining behavior.

Links to ATL Skills:

Thinking skills: Applying cognitive models to explain behavior; evaluating the reliability of cognitive processes.

Research skills: Analyzing experimental designs and interpreting data in cognitive psychology.

Links to TOK:

How reliable is our memory as a source of knowledge?

To what extent do cognitive biases shape the ways we construct knowledge?

How can we know what is truly happening in the “black box” of the human mind?

Titel 4 Sociocultural

Unit: Sociocultural Level of Analysis
Overview:
This unit investigates how social and cultural factors influence human behavior. Students explore key concepts such as social identity, cultural norms, conformity, stereotyping, and the influence of group dynamics on individual behavior. The unit also examines how culture shapes cognition and behavior through studies in cross-cultural psychology. Students critically evaluate the extent to which behavior can be attributed to situational versus dispositional factors and reflect on the role of culture in shaping human experience.

Links to ATL Skills:

Thinking skills: Analyzing the influence of social and cultural contexts; comparing different cultural perspectives.

Research skills: Evaluating the methods used in sociocultural research; understanding cross-cultural comparisons.

Links to TOK:

How does culture shape what we know and how we know it?

To what extent is human behavior universal, and to what extent is it culturally specific?

How do values and assumptions influence psychological research in different cultural contexts?
