• Is it possible to have knowledge of the past
• Is truth the goal of historical inquiry?
• What counts as fact in history?
• What is history? Is it more creative and interpretive as opposed to scientific and objective?
• Is knowledge about the past different from other kinds of knowledge?
• Do other AOKs rely on the choices made by individuals as much as history? How does this affect the quality of the knowledge produced?

Key concepts: interpretation, truth and certainty

Aims:
To examine how knowledge is produced, stored, and disseminated in history.
To look at how historians make decisions about what to study and why.

Titel 5 AOK The Human Sciences

In this unit we will explore how knowledge in the human sciences is produced, tested, and accepted. We will examine the strengths and limitations of the methods used by human scientists, look at how human scientists word questions, what counts as ‘good’ evidence in human sciences, and what the differences are between humans sciences and natural sciences and human sciences and history.

Knowledge questions:
- How do paradigm-shifts function differently in the human sciences than in the natural sciences? What does this suggest about the nature of the AOKs Human sciences and Natural sciences?
- In what ways might we say that our knowledge in HS improves over time. Would your answer differ in relations to different AOKs (eg. HS, NS, and History)?
- In what ways does the perspective of the knowledge producer influence the knowledge produced  in the HS and in other AOKS? Are the human sciences especially affected by the perspectives of their experts?
- Do AOKS other than the normative sciences have normative claims? How do other AOKs manage the influence of normative values?

Aims:
What is human science?
How do human scientists create knowledge?
How can you see TOK in your own HS course?
To examine how knowledge is made, stored, and disseminated in human sciences.
To look at the ethical considerations that human scientists must make and how they make them.
To look at how human science has evolved over time.

Titel 7 AOK: The Arts

In this unit, students explore how knowledge is constructed, communicated, and interpreted within the Arts. The distinctive nature of artistic knowledge will be explored, such as how it differs from and complements other forms of knowing. Key questions will address the role of creativity, interpretation, and emotion in shaping understanding. Students will also reflect on how the Arts contribute to cultural identity and foster new ways of seeing the world. This will be done though a range of artistic forms and traditions.

We will explore knowledge questions such as:
SCOPE:
-Is artistic knowledge something that cannot be expressed in any other way?
-Does art enlarge what it is possible for us to think and know?

PERSPECTIVE
-Can a work of art have meaning of which the artist themselves is unaware?
-How does knowing more about the social, cultural or historical context of a work of art have an impact on our knowledge of the work itself?
-Should your judgments about art be given the same weight as those of an expert?

METHODS AND TOOLS
-Can some knowledge in the arts only be gained through experience? How does the medium used change the way that knowledge is produced, shared or understood?

ETHICS
-How important is the study of literature in our individual ethical development?
-Is the production and enjoyment of art subject to ethical constraints?
-Can we separate the moral character of the artist from the value of the Artwork?

CONNECTING TO THE CORE THEME
-What moral responsibilities do we have regarding art that has been created or published by other people?

Links to ATL Skills:

Thinking skills: Interpreting meaning and intention in artistic works; evaluating differing perspectives.

Communication skills: Articulating personal responses to art; using conceptual language to explore abstract ideas.

Social skills: Appreciating diverse cultural expressions and viewpoints; fostering intercultural understanding.

Titel 8 The Exhibtion

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Exhibition is a unique and engaging component of the IB Diploma Programme. It invites to explore how knowledge shapes—and is shaped by—the world around us. This last part of year one will guide you through the process of creating your own TOK exhibition, where you will select real-world objects and connect them to key TOK concepts and questions.

Purpose of the Exhibition
At the heart of the exhibition is a single, powerful guiding question:

"Does the exhibition successfully show how TOK manifests in the world around us?"

Your task is to explore this question by selecting three objects and writing thoughtful commentaries that demonstrate your understanding of TOK in action.

Your exhibtion should exhibit the following skills:

That you have:
-developed a deeper understanding of knowledge questions and TOK concepts.
-identifed and analyzed real-world objects through a TOK lens.
-used critical thinking, reflection, and personal engagement.
-built skills in research, writing, and presentation.

Assessment Overview

Your exhibition will be assessed holistically, based on how well it addresses the guiding question. The assessment does not follow a checklist but rather evaluates the overall quality and coherence of your work.
