Knowledge and the Knower
Unit: Knowledge and the Knower
Overview:
This opening theme invites students to reflect on themselves as knowers and thinkers, as well as to consider the diverse communities of knowers to which they belong. The unit provides an essential foundation for the entire TOK course, as students explore the nature of knowledge, how it is constructed, and how it is shared. In class, we will examine core concepts, terminology, and tools that will be revisited throughout the course. This initial inquiry fosters greater self-awareness and encourages students to take ownership of their learning journey.
Links to ATL Skills:
Thinking skills: Developing metacognitive awareness; reflecting on the nature of knowledge and personal learning.
Communication skills: Using conceptual vocabulary to engage with complex ideas; participating in thoughtful discussion.
Social skills: Recognizing and valuing different perspectives within the classroom community.

Key questions will address the role of creativity, interpretation, and emotion in shaping understanding. Students will also reflect on how the Arts contribute to cultural identity and foster new ways of seeing the world. Throughout the unit, we will engage with a range of artistic forms and traditions, encouraging curiosity and open-mindedness.
Links to ATL Skills:
Thinking skills: Interpreting meaning and intention in artistic works; evaluating differing perspectives.
Communication skills: Articulating personal responses to art; using conceptual language to explore abstract ideas.
Social skills: Appreciating diverse cultural expressions and viewpoints; fostering intercultural understanding.

Science
Unit: The Sciences — Area of Knowledge
Overview:
This unit invites students to examine how knowledge is produced, tested, and communicated within the Sciences. Through inquiry and reflection, we will consider what distinguishes scientific knowledge from other forms of knowing, as well as the strengths and limitations of scientific methods. Students will explore the role of observation, experimentation, and evidence in shaping scientific understanding, and will reflect on the ways in which scientific knowledge evolves over time. The unit also encourages students to think critically about the social and ethical dimensions of scientific advancement.
Links to ATL Skills:
Thinking skills: Analyzing the processes through which scientific knowledge is constructed; questioning assumptions and conclusions.
Research skills: Understanding methods of inquiry and investigation in scientific contexts.
Communication skills: Engaging in informed discussion about scientific developments and their implications.

Math AOK
Unit: Mathematics — Area of Knowledge
Overview:
In this unit, students explore the nature of mathematical knowledge and the role of mathematics as an Area of Knowledge. The inquiry focuses on how mathematical concepts are developed, validated, and applied. We will examine the extent to which mathematics is an abstract system versus a tool for understanding the real world, and reflect on the relationship between logic, proof, and creativity in mathematical thinking. Students will also consider how mathematics connects across disciplines and how it shapes our understanding of patterns and relationships.
Links to ATL Skills:
Thinking skills: Applying logical reasoning; recognizing patterns and drawing connections across contexts.
Communication skills: Using precise and conceptual language to express abstract ideas.
Research skills: Exploring the historical and cultural development of mathematical thought.

TOK Projects
Unit: TOK Project Work — Exploring Knowledge in the Human Sciences and Technology
Overview:
In this unit, students engaged in two collaborative TOK projects designed to bring key concepts to life and foster active inquiry.
The first project, Diplomacy, explored the complexities of alliances and ideological influences, offering students the opportunity to reflect on how knowledge in the human sciences — particularly history and political science — is shaped by perspectives and cultural contexts.
The second project, AI and Ethics, invited students to critically examine the ethical implications of emerging technologies. Through a practical investigation, students applied principles of ethical hacking to test whether AI-generated content could influence public knowledge platforms such as Wikipedia. This activity highlighted issues related to digital literacy, the reliability of information sources, and the limitations of current technology.
These projects were developed in response to student feedback, with the aim of making TOK inquiry more dynamic and participatory, especially in early-morning class settings.
Links to ATL Skills:
Thinking skills: Engaging with ethical reasoning and exploring the limits of knowledge.
Research skills: Evaluating sources of information; developing digital literacy.
Social skills: Collaborating effectively on inquiry-based projects; appreciating multiple viewpoints.

Human Sciences
Unit: The Human Sciences — Area of Knowledge
Overview:
This unit explores how knowledge is constructed and used within the Human Sciences, including disciplines such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, and political science. Students consider the challenges of studying human behavior, including the influence of values, culture, and ethics on research. Through inquiry and reflection, students examine the methods used in the human sciences and how these compare to those used in the natural sciences. The unit also invites critical thinking about the strengths and limitations of knowledge claims in the human sciences and how these disciplines contribute to our understanding of society and human experience.
Links to ATL Skills:
Thinking skills: Critically evaluating knowledge claims; recognizing the influence of perspectives and context.
Research skills: Understanding and assessing different research methodologies.
Communication skills: Engaging in thoughtful discussion about complex social phenomena.
