Titel 1 Film language

You are in the first part of media studies introduced to  filmic terminology. Along with gaining knowledge about mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing and use of sound, you'll do small analytical exercises that help you apply your learned vocabulary. After having learned the relevant terminology, you'll complete the pre-production phase of your first film (brainstorming, synopsis, production plan, storyboarding) and get filming and editing equipment.

Titel 2 Christopher Nolan

Auteur course on Christopher Nolan with particular emphasis on the work with structurally complex films, as well as Nolan’s other auteur characteristics.
Memento: The primary focus here is “parallel worlds” and the ways in which the form supports the plot and the premise.
The Prestige: The work focuses specifically on orchestration and the roles of the characters in relation to premise and theme.
Inception: Presentations will be given in which the groups work with the following analytical methods: auteur analysis, thematic analysis, genre analysis, intertextual analysis, comparative analysis, Inception as a postmodern film.

Titel 3 True Crime, Pre-Ib

We'll start by defining the true crime documentary as a genre. Thereafter, we'll use three of Bill Nichols' modes of representation to theoretically work with small clips (the observational, expository and participatory modes). We'll particularly work with form, codes of fiction and non-fiction as well as the use of filmic devices and their effects. After analysing clips, two episodes from a documentary series as well as a documentary in regard to 1) Mode of documentary, 2) Use of codes of fiction and non-fiction and 3) Use of filmic devices you are to make a presentation in groups of a documentary of your own choosing.
