Titel 1 American Dreams (EKSAMEN)

We will look into the idea and promise of ’The American Dream’, explore what it means, and assess whether or not the dream is still alive today. As we move along, we will identify core American values and touch upon four versions of the American dream: The immigrant dream, the middleclass dream, the entrepreneurial dream, and the new American dream.

Key words are: Individuality, freedom, mobility, equality/inequality, privilege, immigration and education.

Titel 2 Novel: The Collector (EKSAMEN)

The purpose of reading the novel is to actually read a novel, a complete work, at your own pace. The book club form makes you work in small groups, and you are in charge of analytical focus points, summaries and debate. Along the way we will also touch upon aspects like conflict, characterization, environment and the gothic genre, social class, types of love, the unreliable narrator, and intertextuality. In order to understand some of the intertextual references you will become familiar with the outline of Shakespeare's the Tempest and Romeo and Juliet.

Titel 3 Narrating truth

This course offers a short introduction to the genre of true crime and apology strategies.
In relation to True Crime focus is on 'the donkey', framing,  the use of elements of fact/fiction and our fascination with true crime.  
Within the genre of apology we identify the difference between apology and apologia, and through knowledge about the 5 main apology strategies (denial, evasion of responsibility, reducing offensiveness, corrective action and mortification) we can analyse and evaluate the quality of an apology.

Titel 4 WWI poetry (EKSAMEN)

The course will introduce to WWI with special focus on Britain’s engagement in the Great War. The course material addresses questions such as:
Why did the young men go?
How did they deal with the unexpected realities of the first full-scale industrialised war?
Why did shellshock become an important new word in the English language?
What roles were assigned to the women behind the lines?
How could the gap between the Home Front and the real frontline be bridged?
What is the story behind the poppy of Remembrance Day?
Is Remembrance Day still relevant today? – WWI ended more than 100 years ago.

We will practice analytical skill, consider genre characteristics and develop our vocabulary and conversational skill.

Key terms are: Stanza, verse line, speaker, patriotism, masculinity, femininity, propaganda, mobilization, allied powers vs. central powers, trench warfare, no man's land, shell shock, imperialism.

This course explores the English language as a lingua franca, and we will discuss pros and cons of global Englishes.
Focus is on the purpose of a lingua franca, differences between standard English and variation, dialect, sociolect, ethnolect, and the relation between language and identity.

The course will explore British identity and motivation in relation to her colonial activities and the rise and fall of the British Empire. This includes inside and outside perspectives on Britain and her empire.

Titel 8 Violence and punishment in the US (EKSAMEN)

This course on violence and punishment gives an introduction to various types of violence and their consequences. We will question and discuss human nature in relation to the intention of the perpetrator and our fascination with violence in literature and the media. What are some of the arguments in favor of punishment and rehabilitation, what does it mean to forgive a perpetrator, and is the death sentence a good idea?

Key terminology: Assault, interpersonal violence, gender based violence, domestic violence, psychological violence, intention, loss, remorse, forgiveness, deterrence, rehabilitation, murder (first degree, second degree, manslaughter), the death sentence.
