George Orwell: Animal Farm and 1984
We'll start our English course with a classic novel, George Orwell's "Animal Farm" from 1945. You will be reading quite a lot of text - an entire novel - which will be a pleasant experience. Besides, "Animal Farm", which is an allegorical study of power and politics, will seem quite relevant today.
We'll focus on vocabulary, analysis of setting, social environment, characters (a lot!), but also rhetorical analysis, analysis of argumentation and of commercials and propaganda.
George Orwell: Animal Farm. 1945.
In March 2026, we seized the opportunity to revisit George Orwell in connection with a new documentary which focuses on Orwell and his ideas about society, surveillance and totalitarianism and relate them to today's world.

Northern Ireland - Still Troubled?
Alessandra Celesia's new documentary, The Flats, tells the stories of people in today's Belfast who are still affected - troubled - by the Troubles in the 1960s to 1997, specifically on the so-called Bloody Sunday in 1972.
To better understand what the documentary shows, and because the history of Ireland and Northern Ireland is a fundamental part of British history, we'll study the differences and prejudices about each other that exist among Catholics and Protestants - Republicans and Unionists, learning about the fairly recent history of the Troubles, how they ended - politically - in 1997, but still seem to haunt individuals in Northern Ireland.

Scotland: Whit Like? - EXAM
Our study trip will take us to Scotland - with social studies. So, what is it like, this country, which is a part of the United Kingdom but both historically and more recently has fought against the English? So, the focus will be on Scottish national identity then and now.
In English, we'll begin with a modern (American!) representation of an important period in Scottish history with the popular tv series Outlander. It will be an opportunity to learn some history as well as using your skills at analysing a visual text. More history is found at Bannockburn with national poet Robert Burns. Then we'll move quickly to the present and study what modern Scotland, especially regarding social class and modern Scottish politics, looks like so that you'll be prepared for your tasks on the study trip.
In Scotland, main points of interest (here in our UVB) are:
In Edinburgh:
Guided tour at the Scottish Parliament + meeting with MSP Emma Roddick. Your interviews with random Scots about their views on Scottish national identity, independence and Brexit.
Traditions: Ceilidh dancing!
In Glasgow:
Guided tour with Invisible Glasgow, a former homeless person. Your own field studies of selected areas in Glasgow.
In the Highlands:
ALMOST in the footsteps of the Scottish rebels in the 1700s :)
Texts:
Most of the texts are from Finderup & Fog: Worlds of Scotland. Systime 2024. We'll read the background texts about Scottish history as we go along.
Ronald D. Moore : Outlander, episode 5 + the first part of episode 6. A Netflix tv series, 2014-? - based on Diana Gabaldon's series of novels, no. 1 published in 1991
Sabaton: Sabaton History Hour on The Battle of Bannockburn. Video

Darren McGarvey: Poverty Safari. 2017. Three excerpts from McGarvey's book - from Finderup & Fog: Worlds of Scotland. Systime 2024 + Video introduction to McGarvey.
PLUS, in January 2026:
Again, we're lucky. Betty Nansen provides us with an opportunity to revisit Scottish history with their 'dance theater' about the 'twa' queens, Mary and Elizabeth.
Liz Lochead: Mary Queen of Scots got her head chopped off. 1989. Very short extract from the play.

Lord of the Flies - EXAM
Is Man Inherently Good or Evil?
Put very simply, that is the question William Golding examines in his classic novel The Lord of the Flies from 1960. A slightly more advanced version of that question would include political thinkers such as John Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau and their ideas on the most adequate society.
We'll read and analyse the entire novel and focus on themes, characters and symbolism. Furthermore, you'll be introduced to three 'schools' of literary theory and work with contextualisation.

Australia - The Land - EXAM
We'll go 'Down Under' - in texts and films, that is. Our focus will be on how the vast, strange and in most places seemingly quite uninviting LAND is perceived by white Australians as well as Aboriginal Australians. The latter includes how the intimate knowledge of the land that Aboriginal Australians appear to have (traditionally, at least) plays a special role.
Besides, students will give presentations on various aspects of Australian life, nature, culture, history.
Most of the texts are from Fog & Finderup: Worlds of English. Systime 2022

We'll watch the performance of Joe Penhall's play The Dumb Show by That Theatre. It's "a comedy about fame, betrayal and greed", it says on That Theatre's website.

Love in Eng.Lit. - EXAM
A fairly short course focusing on how love (and marriage) is perceived and written about in English literature from the tragic story of young love in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet over Austen's still romantic, but also slightly critical Pride and Prejudice and ending with an eminently subtle masterpiece by Kate Chopin.
We will return to Shakespeare with Macbeth. Think about the love between Macbeth and his wife when we meet them :)
Besides, some students will give presentations on aspects of love.

Shakespeare - EXAM
We're returning to Shakespeare. We'll refresh our memories of who William Shakespeare was, and along the way central words like iambic pentameter, rhyming couplet, etc.
First, we'll get to know him through Chloé Zhao's film adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's novel Hamnet. It is not so much about Shakespeare, though, but about his wife and their relationship, centering around the death of their son Hamnet.
Secondly, you will get an introduction to Shakespeare and the play Macbeth, which we will be studying, some in cursory reading, some in close reading and with some creative activities. We'll be focusing on Macbeth himself, of course, but also and slightly more on women and their power/lack thereof. To further that focus, we will see a ballet called Lady Macbeth, especially created for the Royal Danish Ballet.
Chloé Zhao: Hamnet (2026)
Workshop om Shakespeare og Macbeth med Janice Dunn og Maria Lohmann, 7.4.2026. Focus on the supernatural: Act I scene 1 (witches) + Act III scene 4 (ghost)
