Titel 2 Multicultural Britain (EXAM)

Multicultural Britain

This course is about British multiculturalism in the 21s century. It pivots on the idea of how to live with difference. The course centres on the intertwined notions of multiculturalism, race, ethnicity, identity and super-diversity. In the course, the students will be exposed to texts of many different genres: history, lecture, articles, reports, speeches, poetry and one short story. The course work engages students’ critical and creative responses and helps them improve their analytical skills through written assignments and oral presentations.

Titel 3 American Dream

AMERICAN DREAM, COURSE DESCRIPTION

The frontier heritage of The United States of America arguably gave rise to a unique set of national norms and values which are often considered collectively under the heading: “the American Dream”.

This course presents students with a brief historical outline of the rise (and fall?) of “the American Dream”. It offers an overview of how this national mythos has developed since the beginning of European settlement until the ascent of the US to a modern nation and a superpower. However, the course also problematizes overly positive notions of the American Dream as a safeguard of liberty and equality for all.

During the course, students engage with texts of fiction and non-fiction as well as films which explore the idea of “The American Dream” from different angles. They obtain a topical vocabulary which includes the following terms and phrases:

- The American Dream
- equality
- liberty
- individualism
- the ‘can-do-spirit’
- social mobility
- patriotism.

Curriculum texts:
“Frontier Heritage” (1984), article by Edward N. Kearny
“Everything Is Far from Here” (2017), short story by Cristina Henríquez
“American Idiot” (2004), song by Green Day
Park Avenue (2012), documentary film directed by Alex Gibney
The Blind Side (2009), film directed by John Lee Hancock
“Traditional American Values and Beliefs”, article by Edward N Kearny, Jo Crandall, and Mary Ann Kearny in American Ways (2005)

Titel 4 Love

Love
In this short course the students will touch upon various theories of love by working on the article "What is love? Five theories on the greatest emotion of all" (The Guardian, 2012) which explores various scientific and philosophical perspectives on love, highlighting its complexity. Kim Addonizio's poem "Forms of Love" (2010) illustrates love's diverse manifestations, emphasizing its multifaceted nature. Kurt Vonnegut's short story "Long Walk to Forever" (1960) depicts love as unexpected and transformative, showing how it can challenge life choices and emerge in moments of vulnerability while Roger McGough's poem "40-Love" (1974) uses a tennis match metaphor to portray love as a balance of competition and cooperation, requiring ongoing effort. Finally Macklemore's song "Same Love" (2012) advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, presenting love as universal and inclusive, transcending societal norms. Together, these works offer students a rich understanding of love's varied forms and profound impact on human relationships and society.

Titel 5 Victims or Villains (EXAM)

This course takes its point of departure in the refugee crisis which began in 2015 and draws a parallel to the refugee flow we have experienced after the war in Ukraine. Via newspaper articles, a short story, a personal essay and a novel, its aim is to examine the complex ways in which refugees are represented, that is, how they are described and depicted, and how such representations are always bound up with power and politics. More specifically for example in the contrast between the two UK papers The Daily Mail and The Observer. Consequently, students are encouraged to take into consideration how representation is always by somebody, about somebody, and to somebody and thus never neutral or (ideologically) innocent. Finally, the course aims to shed light on the morality of (seemingly) bystanders in the conflict via the representation of the main character in the novel The Optician of Lampedusa.

Titel 6 Division and Polarization (EXAM)

Division and Polarization (introduction to Election 2024 as well)

This course takes its point of departure in an introduction to the 2024 Election by an introduction (repetition) to American values and how they are connected to the American election system and the election. (Key words: autonomy, idealism, sucess, freedom, american dream, differences between Democrats and Republicans, swing states, electoral college etc.)
The key topic of this course is, however, the increased division and polarization in American society. This topic is highlighted via a closer look at abortion and gun ownership in the United States.
