Titel 1 Crime in Fiction

This theme explores crime in fiction through working with a variety of text types. Using the background chapter providing information as to what characterizes the genre, the students have been exposed to classical crime fiction, e.g. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes). Furthermore, they have worked on complex figures like the protagonist in The Man Who Loved Flowers and Dexter.

Titel 2 Global Britain

This theme focuses on the development of Britain into its status today as a superdiverse and, to some extent, convivial society. Firstly, the theme looks briefly - as a backdrop - at Britain as a colonial power. Then follows an introduction to the Windrush Generation including background reading, a letter representing the immigrants from former colonies arriving in Britain in the 50s, and a film dealing with the recent Windrush Scandal. The next part centers on the concept “White Privilege”. The concept is introduced through background reading, two short stories and a short film. Finally, the terms “superdiversity” and “conviviality” are dealt with using background reading and an analysis of both a poem and a song/music video.

Titel 6 Værklæsning: Animal Farm

This theme centres on the reading of George Orwell’s famous novel, Animal Farm, from 1945. An introduction to the author and a focus on why he wrote starts out the course. For that purpose, the students work with an excerpt of his novel Burmese Days. The impact of the novel is then touched upon by working with Coldplay’s Trouble in Town. Then, the novel is read and closely analysed focusing on the following:

- characterization
- setting
- herd behavior
- propaganda and fake news
- argumentation
- The Russian Revolution and The Cold War

Finally, the students work in groups with literary criticism, respectively, formalist, biographical and historical approaches to the book.

Titel 7 Australia - The Land Down Under

‘Australia – The Land Down Under’ starts out with a focus on Australia’s history, as a very old nation to the Aboriginal peoples, but as a fairly new country to the rest of the world including the British colonizers. On the basis of this knowledge, the students examine The Stolen Generation through analysis of a variety of different types of texts. Then, they examine the climate crisis in the country, focusing on bushfires and the Great Barrier Reef. The last part of the course has a focus on language. The students discuss the use of English as a global language as opposed to a first language in relation to lingua franca scenarios including the pitfalls for both native and secondary English speakers. In this context, they investigate how Denmark and Australia work together.

As this course serves as the students’ last course before the exams, they will practice the format of the oral exam in a mock exam about the song Took the Children Away and an oral assignment about the Redfern Speech.
