During the Gothic Horror course, students analyse a number of horror stories, horror films, tv-ads, and tv-series. They learn to identify the typical elements that define the genre. Titel 6 Værkslæsning - EKSAMEN

We have read the book “The Handmaid’s Tale”. As an introduction to the novel, the students worked on presentations regarding the circumstances of the book: the author, the reception of the book, its relevance today and the historical and socio-cultural reality in 1980’s that inspired Atwood to write the book. In our analysis of the novel, we have focused on setting, narrator, characterization of Offred, Serena Joy, the Commander, Moira and Aunt Lydia. Furthermore, we have revisited the definition and characteristics of dystopian literature from our first topic this year and used them in our analysis of the novel. Lastly, we have focused on why a novel from the 1980’s is still relevant today as we have looked at abortion laws in the US before and after Roe v. Wade.

KEY WORDS:
The dystopian hero, dystopia, bureaucratic control, philosophical control, totalitarianism, worst-case scenario, freedom, oppression, futuristic societies, propaganda, surveillance, speculative fiction, Roe v. Wade, abortion in the US, women’s rights, conservative push back in the 1980’s, Margaret Atwood.
