Titel 1 English 1 Identities

For this introduction to English as a subject at 'HF', we are going to focus on 'Identites'/personality. We will practise how to analyse texts from different genres: A TED-talk, a short story, a poem, a spoken word film, a feature film and an excerpt from a novel. We will pay special attention to the differernt aspects that may affect our identities and chances to express these such as race, friends and families, environment, gender and sexuality.

Titel 2 English 2 Trad. Am. values and beliefs EKSAMEN

This topic takes its starting point in three pairs of traditional American values (as outlined by Kearny et al): Individual Freedom & Self-Reliance, Equality of Opportunity & Competition, and Material Wealth & Hard Work, and, not least, the notion of the 'American Dream'. Most of the texts we are going to read will be viewed in this context, and we will also look at the birth of a nation/a nation of immigrants and to an extent at whether the American Dream is available to everyone in equal measures.

Titel 3 English 3 The Australian Dream EKSAMEN

The intention with this topic is to create a historical and cultural frame for reading texts about and from different parts of Australian history: from the colonisation and creation of Australia as a nation, patriotism and life in the bush to the Aboriginal peoples and their cultures and the Stolen Generations. We will finish off with a contemporary view on Australia and present day racism and culture clashes as seen in the documentary 'The Australian Dream'.

We will be working with different genres, both fiction and non-fiiction and will continue to practice analysing these different types of texts + work with new vocabulary from this topic.

'Fantastic Tales' is a topic that focuses on fictional universes that are somehow unrealistic, yet recognisable, such as the world we encounter in the universes of Harry Potter and Narnia. We are looking at the typical underdog protagonist on some form of noble quest in a setting that differs from reality (maybe even a battle between good and evil).

Titel 6 English 6 WW2 and the Holocaust EKSAMEN

This topic acts as a kind of frame around our visit to Krakow in October 2025 (and visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau). We will talk about different ways of describing war/being a soldier or a civilian, and the aftermath of the Holocaust, including accounts seen form children's point of view.

Titel 7 English7 Mental health and neurodivergency EKSAMEN

For this topic we will look at different aspects of 'mental health', both in terms of descriptions of mental health issues seen from the point of view of people diagnosed with e.g. depression, or on the autism spectrum, as well as how psychiatrists and society in general deal with and treat these individuals. Our main focus will be on reading the novel 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' by Mark Haddon, including two reviews to show how the novel has been received.
