Mini US election topic
VI bruger præsidentvalget i USA til at lære lidt om valgsystemet og til at analysere politiske taler. Vi arbejder med retoriske begreber, det retoriske pentagram, Trumps særlige retorik (ad populum og ad hominem især)

American Values EKSAMEN
We have worked with American values - ideals and reality. Starting out with texts idealizing the American dream, the American spirit, immigrants, and the idea that if you work hard enough, you can become successful in life. We have also read texts that show another aspect of American life. The realities of social inequality, poverty, how social heritage can hold you down, and last but not least, how racial inequality continues to affect citizens whose ancestors helped build the nation from the very beginning.

Britain and the World EKSAMEN
Kipling’s ”White Man’s Burden” has been our starting point for understanding the British’ colonial period and the fact that the British understood themselves as benefactors of the uncivilized and savage peoples of the world. Orwell then presents us with the idea that the British were in fact hypocrites exploiting the colonial subjects in “Burmese days” where we also meet an Indian who has internalized the view of the Indians as inferior.
Cut to Britain after decolonization and to today’s multicultural society where tensions exist between white racist nationalists and immigrants as seen in “This is England”, and where descendants of immigrants struggle against racism, fighting for their own right to a mixed identity, and to be respected, as seen in “Where you From” by Riz Ahmed.
Finally, we take a look at the English language being a global language as a result of the British Empire and the cultural dominance of the USA today, and consequently how English has become a lingua franca for most of the modern world.

Horror - EKSAMEN
We have worked with the horror genre using psychological theory about the human mind. Sigmund Freud’s theories about the Id, the Ego and the Superego have provided us with a framework for understanding why we are fascinated with stories about fear, death and violence. We have used Freud's theories to understand why the characters in horror stories act the way they do. Psychological horror in "The Shining", gothic horror in “Dracula” and Stephen King’s essay about “Why we crave horror” have been the core texts in this short topic. We finished off with the Cure’s “Lullaby” giving us an example of the uncanny.
