Titel 1 WW1 in Poetry and Prose EXAM

We are going to read poems from a variety of WW1 poets, and also some more recent works with a WW1 setting. Part of our focus will be on how the different styles of the poems reflect the content and theme. We will also discuss the role literature and art can play in relation to war and how the poems have different subject matter and describe different attitudes to being a soldier and to the war. The film 'Regeneration',  which shows how some soldiers reacted to the horrors of the war and were treated for shell shock, (including Sassoon and Owen) will be analysed as well as contemporary artworks that work with the visualisation of the loss of lives during the war.

Titel 2 The US with a Native American angle EXAM

As an attempt to approach an American topic in a way that has not been covered on the various level B English classes, we are going to focus on the Native American aspect of the US history, culture and literature.
Essential questions to try and cover will be:
How have Native Americans been portrayed by people outside their cultures? How do these representations affect public perceptions of Native Americans? In what ways do these representations further Native American stereotypes?
How did (and still do!) Native Americans contribute to the history of literature and writing in America?
What about NAs in the US today? Native American activism and lives today

In addition, you will read an American novel chosen and read together in small groups (literature circles) and relate these to the concept of 'the American Dream'.

Titel 3 Evil EXAM

This topic will focus on how the concept of evil has been described and portrayed in both non-fiction and fiction. We will explore what it means when we describe people and/or acts as evil - where does evil come from? Can we prevent it from surfacing? We will look at concepts such as moral evil >< natural evil; banality of evil >< traditional evil. Excerpts of works by Shakespeare will be included (from Macbeth and Richard III), as well as a performance of Richard III at Rønne Theatre.

Part of our focus will be on influence colonisation and globalisation has had on the 'Special Region' and the use of English in Hong Kong as an example of how English has become a global language.
