Vores studietur gik til Prag og Dresden, hvor vi studerede byernes forskelle og uligheder efter de har været igennem 2. verdenskrig på hver sin måde. Dresdens bymidte bar tydeligt præg af, at den blev bombet i løbet af krigen, og at udvalgte bygninger var bygget op igen.
I den forbindelse læste vi romanen 'Slaughterhouse Five' af Kurt Vonnegut, der som amerikansk krigsfange oplevede bombningen af Dresden og skrev sin roman om denne oplevelse.
Vi læste romanen som optakt til studieturen og brugte studieturen til at uddybe vores forståelse af romanens 'setting'.
I vores litterære analyse havde vi særligt fokus på fortællerstemmen, som skifter fra 1. kapitel til resten af romanen, på struktur/komposition, på karakteranalyse og på kontraster imellem det gode og det onde.

Baggrundsmateriale
I Prag fik vi en guidet rundvisning med fokus på det Jødiske kvarter og på Prags modstandskamp under 2. verdenskrig.
Undervejs fra Prag til Dresden besøgte vi Theresienstadt og fik en guidet rundvisning.
I Dresden besøgte vi The Museum of War, hvor vi fik vi en guidet rundvisning med fokus på anden verdenskrig.
I vores møder med de tre guider i Prag, Theresienstadt og Dresden oplevede vi måder at tale om krigen på, som stod i interessant kontrast til romanens kommunikationsform.
Under alle disse guidede rundture oplevede vi desuden English as a Lingua Franca.
I samfundsfag læste klassen om forbrydelse og straf, og i historie havde klassen et lille emne om 2. verdenskrig.

The British Empire
Vi lærer om Det Britiske Imperium og læse tekster skrevet af hhv. repræsentanter for imperiet og efterkommere af kolonitiden.
Vi fokuserer på, den magt og velstand, som imperiet bragte Storbritannien, og på den selvforståelse, som briterne havde som et civiliseret folk, der bragte uddannelse, orden og civilisation til de - i deres øjne- primitive nationer, de koloniserede.
Begge dele er indkapslet i det følgende citat af Lord Curzon (1859-1925), som var Viceroy i Indien.
"In the Empire we found not merely the key to glory and wealth, but the call to duty and the means of service to mankind" - 1907
Idéen om pligt er beskrevet i det centrale digt 'The White Man's Burden'.

The Romantic Period was a literary movement in Britain from 1798 to 1832 (34 years)
Its self-proclaimed beginning was in 1798, when 'The Lyrical Ballads' was published. This is a collection of poems by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge in which they formulate a kind of battle cry for a new literary movement.
Wordsworth and Coleridge were reacting to the ways in which the Industrial Revolution and the Enlightenment had transformed English society; and they were advocating the writing of poetry as “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings". Poetry should take its origin "from emotion recollected in tranquility.” and be written in “the real language of men,” meaning in less formal and elevated language than what had until then been the norm.
The movement is divided into 1st generation poets and 2nd generation poets
1st generation poets: Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake
2nd generation poets: Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley, Byron, Keats
The second generation poets shared a love for nature but were different from the first generation in that they were very passionate about love and the freedom to practice love regardless of norms and marital institutions. Especially Byron and the Shelleys were rebellious and defiant of authority. They were partly inspired by the French Revolution and its utopian ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

This course on feminism focuses on how to understand the term feminism and how some of the most influential texts on the topic in modern Western culture have discussed the need for equality between the genders.
The text 'Understanding Patriarchy' by bell hooks, 2004, examines patriarchy and argues that is both oppressive to women and to men. bell hooks claims it is the ”single most life-threatening social disease assaulting the male body and spirit in our nation”.
The speech, A Woman's Civil Right by Betty Friedan, 1969, argues for equality between the genders and specifically to give women the right to decide whether or not they want to terminate a pregnancy by getting an abortion. She claims that this free choice is essential for the happiness of both genders.
The speech was delivered on February 16, 1969 at the First National Conference on Abortion Laws.
The novel The Awakening by Kate Chopin revolves around a young married woman at the end of the 19th century who experiences a profound transformation which leads her to question the constraints of society and her roles as a wife and mother. The story explores themes of identity, independence, and the struggle against societal norms.
