Mathematically Minded - novel
To tone English in this class, where the students also study Mathematics at A-level, we have read Mark Haddon's novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, whose narrator is a young boy whose entire world revolves around mathematics. In our reading of the novel, we have focused particularly on different ways of perceiving the world, such as a mathematical-logical worldview. We have also explored themes such as "growing up," "coping with loss," and "being different." Some of the mathematical topics have been covered by the class's mathematics teacher. In addition, we have watched Gus Van Sant’s film Good Will Hunting (1997), where we discussed some of the same themes.

In this course, the class has studied theoretical approaches to reading graphic novels. Building on this foundation, we have read Charles Forsman's graphic novel The End of the Fucking World and watched the first episode of the Netflix adaptation of the same name by director Jonathan Entwistle. Through these works, we have explored key themes such as coming of age, being an outsider, coping with loss, and family relations.

Meet the Monster - horror fiction (EXAM)
In this course, we have worked with horror literature in which we encounter different types of monsters. We have attempted to "dissect" these monsters in order to discuss what each of them represents in the societies in which the texts were written. We have also examined how the texts create suspense, especially through the use of Gothic elements. Our primary focus has been on the vampire and the werewolf, but we have also briefly "visited" Lovecraft’s more elusive monsters. The course has also served as a methods course, in which we explored different theoretical approaches, such as psychoanalytic reading, feminist reading, postcolonial reading, and new historicist reading.
Texts:
Urban Legends
Bram Stoker, Dracula
Richard Matheson, I Am Legend (excerpt) + short clips from film adaptations of the novel
Craig D. Forster, Overtime (short film)
Michael Jackson, Thriller (lyrics) + the opening of the music video
