In this course, you will get to know some basic facts about the country, which will not only make it easier to understand the texts, but which will also make you able to analyse them in more detail. Among other things, the purpose of this introduction is to give you an impression of the early contact between Maori and the European settlers. New Zealand history is very different from Danish history because it is a history of colonisation, some call it invasion, with dire consequences for the original population of the country.

The course centres around the novel Border Crossing by Pat Barker.
The focus is on characterisation and thematic analysis of the plot.
Through a comparison to articles and a short story related to the theme, we will discuss aspects like parenting, good and evil, and nature versus nurture.

Modern football was invented in the UK by the upper classes in the 19th century. Very early on, it became a popular sport that engaged all layers of society. We are going to look at different aspects of football culture in the UK and Canada: historical events, images and texts related to football culture on and off the field.

Themes are managing a football club, the players who became iconic, the fan culture, and the role of football in everyday life.
