True Crime: Serial
Podcasten er blevet meget populær i de senere år. En podcast er fx en fortælling, som man lytter til, præcis som man ville lytte til radio, men som også kan downloades. Podcasts kan omhandle mange forskellige emner og genrer, men de mest populære podcasts er ofte gribende fortællinger. I USA banede podcasten Serial vejen for en lang række podcasts om kriminalitet samt retssystemets fejl og mangler. Genren, hvor mord og vold er omdrejningspunktet kaldes for True Crime og løber på tværs af både film, bøger og podcasts. Man kan sige, at Serial blev startskuddet til podcastens udbredelse med omkring 1,5 millioner lyttere per episode og over 68 millioner downloads i løbet af det første år (300 millioner i dag).
I dette forløb skal vi arbejde med podcasten som genre og dens undergenrer, samt begreber som fx konnotation/denotation, lyd som fakta- og fiktionskode samt diskutere den efterfølgende kritik af Sarah Koenigs bias i fortællingen af sagen. Vi lytter til alle 12 episoder og skriver en analyseopgave i 5 afsnit, hvor I skal øve jer på at skrive introduktion, body-paragraphs og afsluttende afsnit.
I slutningen af forløbet skal du vide noget om true crime som genre, lyd og lydeffekter, fakta og fiktionskoder samt opbygning af podcast og konnotation/denotation. Slutteligt vil vi diskutere det moralske efterspil ved podcasten.

Reading Normal People
Vi skal i dette forløb læse Sally Rooneys roman Normal People. Den bliver udgivet i 2018 og straks efter er den et kæmpehit. Faktisk bliver den senere lavet til en TV-serie, som I måske har stiftet bekendtskab med på DRTV. The Guardian kalder romanen for “the literary phenomenon of the decade”, måske fordi den på en og samme tid handler om et enkelt kærlighedsforhold, der dog alligevel er meget kompliceret.
Rooneys sprog er meget "straightforward", og den bliver derfor ikke tung for jer at læse. Alligevel bruger Rooney enormt mange sproglige billeder, som vi selvfølgelig skal opdage undervejs i vores læsning. Derudover arbejder vi også med oversættelse, hvor vi arbejder med reglerne for oversættelse og derefter giver os i kast med oversættelse blot med ordbøger, men uden google translate og ChatGPT. Vi kigger senere på disse to versioners oversættelser og kigger på, hvilke mangler, I kan spotte i oversættelserne.
Romanen tematiserer den første store kærlighed, men også mentalt helbred, social ulighed, usikkerhed og mobning.
Vi starter forløbet op med at kigge på Irlands samfundsmæssige og økonomiske forhold i 2010'erne for derefter at kigge på de ord, Sally Rooney selv sætter på sin roman. Herefter læser vi 2 kapitler af gangen og arbejder til hvert kapitel med miljø- og personkarakteristik samt sproglige virkemidler. Derudover arbejder vi også med grammatik i hvert kapitel.

Canadian identity
I dette forløb skal det handle om Canada. Canada er et interessant engelsktalende land, fordi det indeholder mange forskellige kulturer smeltet sammen til én fælles national identitet. Canadierne selv beskriver dette som en 'canadisk mosaic' og dermed et multikulturelt landskab, der favner diversitet og inklusion.
I dette forløb kommer vi til at fokusere på den canadiske identitet, specielt i forhold til det multikulturelle Canada, men også i forhold til den del af den oprindelige befolkning, der kalder sig inuitter.
Vi analyserer og diskuterer dokumentarfilmen Angry Inuk, der handler om udfordringerne omkring salget af sælskind i Inuit samfund i Canada. Som afslutning på dokumentaren skal I skrive en analyse af dokumentaren med fokus på modes of appeal, language og instruktøren Alethea Arnaquq-Barils intention.
Vores fokus i arbejdet med dette forløb er canadisk identitet, multikulturalisme og indigenous culture med særligt fokus på Inuit.
I forbindelse med fokus på canadisk identitet og multikulturalisme læser vi novellen "Everybody Talked Loudly in Chinatown" med fokus på hovedkarakterens kultur-splittelse. Vi sætter novellen op overfor kortfilmen "The Chinese Violin", der skildrer en positiv kultursammensmeltning af canadisk og kinesisk identitet. Derudover læser vi "America is Sexy" for at sætte fokus på den særlige canadiske identitet i sammenligning med USA.
I 2016 da Donald Trump vandt præsidentembedet første gang, deklarerede nogle amerikanere endda, at de ville flytte til Canada for bedre levevilkår. Hvorfor har nogle amerikanere det sådan med Canada? Det skal vi også kigge lidt nærmere på.
Til sidst skal I også lave et innovativt projekt, hvor I skal bruge Canadas Multiculturalism Act til at opfinde et event, der kan belyse og sprede multikulturalismen i Canada.

Vores sidste forløb i år bliver et fodboldforløb, hvor vi skal undersøge primært britisk fodbold samt kigge på engelsk som lingua franca i fodboldens verden. Vi læser både fiktion og non-fiktions tekster og får trænet de analysebegreber, vi har arbejdet med til begge genrer i løbet af året. Under dette forløb arbejder vi med Storbritannien som identitet og kultur. Vi starter forløbet med en kort introduktion til det britiske imperiums storhed og fald. Herefter arbejder vi videre med klasse og etnicitet i det britiske samfund i dag.
Vi starter forløbet med at se del 1 af dokumentaren How to Break the Class Ceiling (Amol Rajan, 2022), hvor eleverne stifter bekendtskab med unge briter, der har svært ved at få foden ind på arbejdsmarkedet på trods af uddannelser, fordi de kæmper med at virke posh nok til jobsamtalerne.
Vi forsøger først og fremmest at sætte det britiske samfund i nogle klasse-bokse ved at læse om Jilly Coopers beskrivelse af de engelske samfundsklasser. Hernæst går vi videre med at arbejde med novellen "The Happiest Days of your Life" af Penelopy Lively. Novellen giver os anledning til at diskutere Englands skolesystem og dennes påvirkning af klasse i det britiske samfund i dag. Vi arbejder herefter med John Agards digt "Listen Mr. Oxford Don", hvor vi skal analysere immigration, sprog og klasse.
Som baggrundtekster lytter vi til David Crystals videoer om "New Englishes" og "Two English Worries", og vi bruger hjemmesiden The British Library til at tilgå og lytte til forskellige dialekter og accenter.

The Great Gatsby af F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925) er en af de mest berømte romaner i amerikansk litteraturhistorie. Den er endda en del af den kanon, der læses i amerikanske High Schools, og så er den senest i 2013 blevet filmatiseret af Baz Luhrman. De fleste har derfor en idé om, hvad The Great Gatsby handler om, og derfor skal du undervejs i forløbet forholde dig til disse forskellige analyser og fortolkninger.
Undervejs i vores læsning dykker vi ned i romanens tematikker, personer og miljøer, og du skal kunne sætte romanen ind i en historisk kontekst ved at drage paralleller til nutidens USA.
Derudover giver forløbet dig et indblik i modernism som litterær periode og i den historiske periode kaldet The Jazz Age. Vi zoomer også ind på The American Dream og social mobilitet i det amerikanske samfund fra dengang til i dag. Sidst, men ikke mindst beskæftiger vi os med den historiske metode samt den biografiske metode som afsæt for læsningen af romanen.
Til hvert kapitel arbejder vi med forskellige fokusfelter i grammatik, hvor vi bruger eksempler fra bogen, som vi afslutter med en sætningsanalyse.
Vi træner skriftlighed undervejs og ved forløbets afslutning ved at skrive afsnit til et analytical essay.

Canadian identity
I dette forløb skal det handle om Canada. Canada er et interessant engelsktalende land, fordi det indeholder mange forskellige kulturer smeltet sammen til, hvad de selv kalder, én fælles national identitet. Canadierne selv beskriver dette som en 'canadisk mosaic' og dermed et multikulturelt landskab, der favner diversitet og inklusion.
I dette forløb kommer vi til at fokusere på den canadiske identitet, specielt i forhold til det multikulturelle Canada, men også i forhold til den del af den oprindelige befolkning, der kalder sig inuitter.
Vi analyserer og diskuterer dokumentarfilmen Angry Inuk, der handler om udfordringerne omkring salget af sælskind i Inuit-samfundet i Canada. Som afslutning på dokumentaren skal I skrive en analyse af dokumentaren med fokus på modes of appeal, language og instruktøren Alethea Arnaquq-Barils intention.
Vores fokus i arbejdet med dette forløb er canadisk identitet, multikulturalisme og indigenous culture med særligt fokus på Inuit.
I forbindelse med fokus på canadisk identitet og multikulturalisme læser vi novellen "Everybody Talked Loudly in Chinatown" med fokus på hovedkarakterens kultur-splittelse. Vi sætter novellen op overfor kortfilmen "The Chinese Violin", der skildrer en positiv kultursammensmeltning af canadisk og kinesisk identitet. Derudover læser vi "America is Sexy" for at sætte fokus på den særlige canadiske identitet i sammenligning med USA.
Da Donald Trump vandt præsidentembedet for første gang i 2016 var der mange amerikanere, der deklarerede, at de havde lyst til at flytte til Canada for at flygte fra USA. Hvad er det, der gør, at visse amerikanere har haft det sådan? Er det det samme i dag?
Til sidst skal I også lave et innovativt projekt, hvor I skal bruge Canadas Multiculturalism Act til at opfinde et event, der kan belyse og sprede multikulturalismen i Canada.
