Titel 4 Twisted Stories

The purpose of this course has been to explore stories where both plotlines and characters defy expectations.

In this course, we have worked with the genre of twisted stories, where characters and events often take unexpected and unsettling turns. We focused on how a plot twist can create surprise, suspense, or a sudden shift in understanding for the reader or viewer — and how this effect can be achieved through specific narrative techniques.

We concentrated especially on three key methods for creating effective plot twists:
Keep important information: Withholding essential facts from the audience until a crucial moment.
Foreshadowing: Planting subtle hints or clues earlier in the story that only reveal their significance later.
An unreliable narrator: Allowing the storyteller to distort, hide, or twist the truth, changing how the audience perceives the narrative.

Materials:
Shirley Jackson "Charles" (1948)
James Reasoner: "House Names" (2010)
Donna Moore "Mondays and Thursdays" (2010)
Neil Gaiman "Click Clack the Rattlebag" (2013)
Uddrag fra serien Black Mirror - ep. "White Bear" (2013)

Written assignment: Sonya C. Dodd "In an Instant" (2013)

Methods:
- Joint analyses of texts, focusing on character development, narrator perspective, and narrative structure.
- Group work identifying and evaluating plot twists and their effects.
- Class discussions about how readers’ and viewers’ expectations can be manipulated through storytelling.

Titel 5 FFF3: Innovationsforløbet/Toxic Beauty

The purpose of this minor interdisciplinary course, combining English and Chemistry, was to explore how the human body is portrayed in media and to investigate the chemical substances people are exposed to through the beauty industry. The aim was to raise students’ awareness of the societal and health-related issues connected to beauty standards while also strengthening their oral presentation skills in English and encouraging innovative thinking.

Students were asked to develop an innovative solution or campaign addressing a problem related to beauty standards, harmful beauty products, or the unrealistic portrayal of the body in media. The solution could take many forms — from awareness campaigns and educational videos to product ideas or social media initiatives.
