Titel 2 The Science of The Brain

Do you take good care of your brain? Are you aware of what you expose it to? Do you think there is a reason why so many people feel mentally stressed in today’s modern world? Are you concerned that we are beginning to “outsource” too many of the brain’s abilities to external gadgets and technological aids?

In this course, the aim is to explore the complex relationship between the human brain and the digital world, to understand how the brain works, how “smart devices” and the internet affect people, and how technology and thinking are interconnected.

Throughout the course, the students have worked innovatively on designing their own infobot and critically reflecting on what kind of information the bot should or could provide to users about the brain. In addition, the students have also been required to critically evaluate the articles we have worked with, as well as challenge their own habits related to brain training and screen addiction.

Titel 3 The American Dream (EXAM)

The idea of the American Dream has long been a powerful and complex part of the United States’ national identity. At its core, it suggests that anyone—regardless of background—can achieve success through hard work, determination, and ambition. However, as history and personal experiences reveal, this dream is neither simple nor equally accessible to all.

In this course, we explore different perspectives on the American Dream through a range of texts spanning over a century. Together, these texts invite the students to reflect critically on the meaning of the American Dream: Is it still alive, or has it become an illusion for many? Who has access to it, and what factors influence one’s chances of achieving it? By engaging with these questions, students will develop a deeper understanding of how literature and real-life narratives can both shape and challenge one of the most enduring ideals in American culture.

Titel 4 Twisted Minds (EXAM)

What does it mean to have a “twisted mind”? Why do people hurt others, and are there different forms of evil?

In this course, the focus has been on various types of “twisted minds” and connecting them to Lars Svendsen’s definitions of evil (demonic evil, instrumental evil, idealistic evil, and stupid evil). In other words, we have examined the group of individuals in society who inflict harm on others in a “twisted” way.

We have explored both fictional representations of a serial killer through excerpts from the film American Psycho, as well as the example of a marginalized individual in the novel The Collector.

In terms of literary concepts, we have taken a closer look at implicit and explicit reading, the unreliable narrator, suspense, and foreshadowing.

Titel 5 English style and variations

What does it mean for a language to be global? And how does English change depending on who speaks it, where, and in what context?

In this course, we explore the English language and its many variations. A central focus has been on style and register, including the differences between spoken and written language, and how language use shifts depending on situation, purpose, and audience. Students have also worked with examples of non-standard English, particularly from regions such as the Caribbean and Nigeria, in order to understand how English adapts to different cultural and linguistic contexts.

Throughout the course, students develop an awareness of what it means for English to function as a world language. We examine how English has evolved over time and how it operates today as a lingua franca, enabling communication across national and cultural boundaries. By engaging with these perspectives, students gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of English and the role language plays in shaping identity, communication, and global interaction.
