The USA in the aftermath of the 2022 midterms
The 2022 midterm elections were held on November 8, and we'll use this opportunity to learn about the US political system and the cultural values that have shaped American society and the political debate today.
We will focus on:
- 'Need to know' about the 2022 midterm elections
- The structure of the political system, focusing on Congress
- The founding of America and American values and beliefs
- Key issues in the campaign
- Perspectives on the US political system in fiction and non-fiction
Analytical focus points:
Throughout our theme, we will analyze a selection of political campaigns from both parties and become acquainted with Cicero's pentagram and Aristotles' modes of persuasion (non-fiction analysis).

Literature with Twists and Turns
Short stories, short films, sonnets... For this theme we'll read literature with twists and turns that both shock and delight us.
The theme is centered on fiction analysis with special focus on:
- Plot and the plot twist as literary device (setup, foreshadowing, misdirection, different types of plot twists)
- Narration
- Characterization
- Atmosphere, or mood
We will make a first acquaintance with Shakespeare and read a couple of his sonnets with special focus on the relationship between form and content, including the significance of the turn.

- At introducere studieretningen

God Save the King! British culture and society
The coronation of King Charles III is on May 6, 2023. We'll seize the opportunity to look at the royal family and its place in British culture and society - a multicultural society in which the gap between 'the haves' and 'the haves-not' is very great.
The theme is a first introduction to British culture and society, and we look to understand what it means to be 'British'. What role does the royal family play in this cultural identity, and will it continue to matter in the future?
To mark the coronation, we will host an Afternoon Tea party in class and celebrate all things British.
Focus areas:
- The imperial history of the monarchy
- Social classes in the UK: Working-class fans - and critique - of the monarchy
- Englishes spoken in the UK
- King Charles’ royal education
- Prince Charles’ Trust
- Post-coronation: The British people’s reception of King Charles

Winter's Bone (værk)
This theme is an exploration of Daniel Woodrell's novel Winter's Bone (2006).
Book description
Amid the harsh landscape of the Ozark Hills, sixteen-year-old Ree is taking care of her mother and two brothers. Her father has put their house up as bail and if he doesn't show up at court it'll be sold from under them. To save her family she needs to track him down but in a community riven with long-running feuds getting answers isn't easy.
Reading the novel
The students will be reading the book parallel to our lessons. In some lessons we work on the text together in class, focusing primarily on characters, setting, and style of writing. We read supplementary texts to put the text into context. In other lessons the students meet up in smaller literature circles to discuss the book independently. The students will conclude the theme by writing a book review.

Off the beaten track: Travel writing
In March of 2024, the class is going on a study trip to Tirana, Albania, accompanied by their English teacher and History teacher. Ahead of this study trip, this theme explores travel writing going back to the British custom of the Grand Tour (1600s-1800s) when traveling abroad was part of the education of privileged young men (and later women).
What catches the attention, fascination, and imagination of travelers going off the beaten track? How do they experience the strange people, cultures, and landscapes they encounter on their way?
In our theme we focus on:
- The concept of "the traveler" (vs. tourist)
- 'The Grand Tour' and the genre of travel writing
- Travel writings from Albania from the Romantic Era to the present
- Post-modern travel writing and the impact of social media

Jamaica - and its ties to the UK
Today, Great Britain is known for its multicultural society, and a major reason why is the nation’s history as a colonial superpower, an Empire. Looking at the Black British community, there is an unspoken divide between those with African and those with African-Caribbean ancestry – What is this about? What characterizes African-Caribbean culture and sets it apart?
To better understand the position of the British African-Caribbean community, we travel across the Atlantic Ocean to the island of Jamaica – the world’s third largest Anglophone country.
Here, we investigate
- Jamaica’s history as a British colony,
- its composite culture and society,
- postcolonial struggle for identity, and
- ambiguous relationship to the English language.

EXAM #1: Views on the EU after Brexit (SRO)
These lessons provide a preface to the students' SRO on the overall subject "The EU and Brexit".
Our theme centers on post-Brexit British society when the public had to come to terms with a new reality as a nation outside of the EU, including the economic consequences felt in the aftermath of the decision. At the same time, politicians had to work out a viable deal with the EU while under close scrutany by the media and "sell" this deal to the public.
Focus areas:
- Views on the EU in the British public post-Brexit: "Bregret?" Moving toward a closer relationship with the EU?
- Contrasting discources on the economic consequences of Brexit
- Media coverage of the political process post-Brexit
- Labour and Conservative: Politicial slogans before and after Brexit: How and why have they changed?
- Political rhetoric on the UK-EU relationship - from both sides - and "selling" the deal (Windsor Framework)
We've primarily worked with non-fiction material of different types, and we've focused on style of writing, rhetorical and discourse anaysis.
In terms of preparation for the SRO, our purposes have been to:
- to assist the students in gaining knowledge of British views on the EU after Brexit, including some overview of the different topics covered in these.
- to present the students with a selection of materials that are suitable for rhetorical- and discourse analysis.
- to show which questions these different methods can help answer, i.e., what you can gain from using these methods.

SRO-prep: A course in effective communication
What is effective communication? Consider public speakers who captivate their audiences, even when talking about difficult subjects. How do they do it? Part of the answer lies in their understanding of the rhetorical situation and use of engaging and persuasive communication techniques.
Being able to communicate effectively is a skill you can draw on in all aspects of your life, especially school and work, and that is why all students must undergo training to help improve their communication skills.
In this short course we'll examine different examples of communication as well as learn more about the rhetorical situation and communication techniques to engage and persuade.
The ultimate goal is to prepare you to give an effective presentation of your SROs when the time comes. Therefore, the course is designed to be equal parts theory and practice.

EXAM #2: Race and Identity in the USA
Race is a difficult subject to approach and address. Science informs us that the concept of race is not a natural, biological principle but a social construction – and one with great consequences for human societies. Race is one of the basic human factors, like gender and sex, that determine how people experience the world, other people, and themselves (identity). This is perhaps especially evident in America with its controversial history of racial exploitation and racism – which still today contributes to racial unrest.
In this theme we want to examine how, in American society, the concept of race gives and denies benefits and privileges. What does it entail to identify (or be identified by others) as “black”? In what different ways do African Americans experience racism? In what ways do African Americans encourage and guard their racial identity and pride as a minority living in a predominantly white society? How do you fight racism, this unjust oppression of a group of people based on race, when you are not in a position of authority or power?
In order to examine the African American experience of race we read, analyze and interpret black literature from great African American authors, upcoming artists, and Civil Rights leaders, past and present.

Karrierelæringsperspektiver i Engelsk

EXAM #4: American Literature in Transition (1920s)
This theme is centered on the 1920s as an exciting literary period of transition in American literature.
This is the period after the Great War (WWI) and just before the crash on Wall Street in 1929 and the Second World War. It may be a short period in time, but it is a time of widespread change, as writers begin to question old norms and experiment with new ways of writing and living life. It's not for nothing that the time period is called "the roaring twenties".
The literary period is part of American modernism. We'll be reading and examining works by Ernest Hemingway, Zora Neale Hurtston, Langston Hughes, Dorothy Parker, and F. Scott Fitzgerald - all considered some of the greatest American writers.

EXAM #5: Shakespeare and gender
This theme centers on gender in the writings of William Shakespeare. Masculine women and feminine men, cross-dressing and gender ambivalence - was Shakespeare woke? Did he support or subvert notions of gender from his time in his literature? And how has gender in his writings been received and understood?
To examine these questions, we'll work on the following:
- What is gender? Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity
- Introduction to William Shakespeare
- Notions of gender in Shakespeare's time: The great chain of being (world view)
- Gender in Shakespeare in Love (1998)
- Excerpts of Twelfth Night, focused on Viola/Cesario and her complicated relationships to especially Orsino and Olivia.
- Excerpts of Macbeth, focused on Lady Macbeth and her relationship to her husband Macbeth as well as their roles in the plot.
- Interpretations of the female characters in modern adaptions of the two plays
- The 'fair youth' sonnets
Grammatik: Bestemt/ubestemt artikel, genitiv, de sproglige eksamensopgaver.

Exam preparation
