Titel 5 Long Way Down - Guns in the USA

Long Way Down - Gun culture in the US

FOCUS
We read Jason Reynold's poetic novel Long Way Down (2018) and talk about issues related to race and gun violence in the USA.

This unit builds on knowledge gathered during last school year's topic on Hip Hop.

Reading the extraordinary novel helps us getting to know new analytical tools, for instance regarding characterisation and symbolism. We talk about 'magic realism' in literature.

We work on the typical features of rap lyrics and expand our knowledge of rhetorical analysis. We also revise and apply our knowledge on literary analysis (language, character, setting, narrative point of view, themes, composition, symbolism ...).

Cultural knowledge we work with concerns how race and class often are linked in the US, how gang culture, toxic masculinity and seemingly unregulated access to guns, shapes the lives of many Americans.

We also work with text material that shows us how gun culture relates to political stance, and to basic American values such as liberty. We look at arguments for and against gun ownership on both sides of the aisle.

We continue working on writing skills. In particular we focus on stylistic analysis and on text structure.

Titel 6 US Presidential Election

FOCUS

Tværfagligt samarbejde med samfundsfag. Forløbet bygger også på viden fra historieforløbet om USAs historie.

We follow the news together and delve into the how and why of the 2024 presidential election in the USA.

We individually track self-chosen US states with regards to the political developments, local issues, particular politicians, etc.

In this unit we focus on the following questions:

-What are the dominating issues at stake in this election?
-How does the American electoral system work?
-What do the two political parties stand for?
-Looking back in history, how was the American identity shaped.
-Which role plays the idea of the 'American frontier'?
-We try to understand the divisions of the American people and where they come from.
-Which roles do the media play?

We have the unique opportunity to talk to a staff member at the White House and you can ask him all the questions you might have.

You also participate in a 'søjledag' in which you hear an expert talk on the topic and work with election campaign videos.

Titel 7 UK Inequality

Inequality in the UK

FOCUS

In this unit we focus on social, economic, and other forms of inequality in the UK.

We first try to define the term 'inequality' with its many facets. The film 'Sorry we missed you' serves as our starting point.

We read a wide range of non-fiction texts giving us background knowledge on the causes of the high level of inequality in the country. With Doris Lessing's short story 'DHSS' and scene 2 of the play 'Wish List' we zoom in on the emotional toll of financial difficulties that stem from systemic inequality.

With an excerpt from Charles Dickens' famous novel 'Oliver Twist' we get an insight into how poverty and inequality have been a controversial part of British identity for a long time.

Student presentations on diverse topics related to inequality in the UK (The British Empire, the monarchy, the British welfare system, Brexit, multiculturalism, etc.) help us obtaining a more comprehensive view of the reasons and consequences of inequality.

TERMINOLOGY

Titel 8 Australia: Nature & Peoples

Australia - Nature's Gifts

FOCUS
With a focus on how Australia's great nature and its first nation people we explore a country where English is the official language outside the UK/US. Our main source
is the new 'Boomerang' by Jesper Kaalund.

Regarding text analysis, our main focus is on 'setting' and 'place'.

We start with watching a video about the country's history, which, however, largely ignores the first nation people, who have lived in Australia for many thousands of years. We find out that this ignorace is slowly being recitified, e.g. by adapting the national anthem.

We explore the somewhat difficult current relationship between the UK and Australia by reading about the Jamie Oliver children's book 'scandal'.

Public access to one of Australia's main tourist destinations, the Ayers Rock in the middle of the country, has been ceased a few years ago and the spot has been renamed to 'Uluru', its indigenious name. We learn about the background for this decision, the native people's view of the natural world and the, somewhat tense relationship to some white Australians. Studying an excerpt from Bruce Pascoe's controversial book 'Dark Emu' and the short story 'Honey' will help us to get a better understanding of this tension.

We wrap up by watching the film 'Tracks', which is based on Robyn Davidson's extraordinary journey through the outback in the 1970s.

TERMINOLOGY

Titel 9 Love

Love and Relationships- Then and today

FOCUS
In this unit, we primarily have a look into how love, dating, and relationships work today. We will, however, start a view back to how these things were different, e.g. in Jane Austen's England or how they are expressed in a poem by W. B. Yeats.

We revise what we know about poetic and rhetorical devices by analysing your self-chosen lovesongs, and poetry by contemporary artist Rupi Kaur. The final written assignment is an analysis of either a short story about a broken-down relationship or a column that explains what type of love makes people the happiest.

We continue with learning a little bit about literary theory by working with the most typical features of postmodernism and postmodern literature. There are various terms, such as 'playfulness', 'metafiction', or 'intertextuality' that can help us to understand what postmodernism is. We apply this knowledge by analysing Margaret Atwood's 1983 'story/text' 'Happy Endings' from 1983.

Throughout this unit, we work with many different types of text (poetry, short stories, articles, song lyrics, ...) and revise how different types of genres require different types of analytical approaches.

You complete a discussion writing assignment working on a newspaper article about dating apps.

We practise discussion writing and stylistic analysis and work through the different types of 'Delprøve 1' language tasks.

TERMINOLOGY
