Language and power
This course dives into the connection between language and power and how we use language as a powerful tool every day. Discourse analysis is one way of investigating this matter and provides us with some tools to work with the material in this course. Part of the course will also look at style of language, especially in "Ink".

Macbeth
The course about Shakespeare's "Macbeth" has covered selected scenes from the play, read in the Cambridge School Shakespeare. Longman's edition as also been available to the students.
The students have also worked with a sonnet and watched a play called "Shakespeare's Ghost".

US Election 2024
Vi studerer det amerikanske præsidentvalg 2024 fra mange faglige vinkler og med inddragelse af mange forskellige genrer, der indbefatter bl.a. retorisk analyse af politiske taler, filmanalyse af kandidaternes kampagnefilm, analyse af sagprosa-artikler om kandidaterne og aktuelle emner i valgkampen, analyse af Christoffer Guldbrandsens dokumentar "A Storm Foretold" (2023). Derudover indgår elevernes egne mundtlige oplæg om kandidaterne og deres National Convention-taler, et internt valgarrangement på skolen, med oplæg fra Professor i statskundskab, Derek Beach fra Århus Universitet samt unge repræsentanter fra den Amerikanske ambassades Youth Council.

We look at number of remarkable female writers since 1792 up until today. The theme explores the development of women's rights and how literature is a way of fighting for those rights. Many of the texts give the opportunity to discuss women’s position in society and how it has changed.

WW1 poetry
This theme focuses on World War One from a British perspective and poetry that depicts the experience of a war. The course looks briefly at what caused the war, recruitment posters and some examples of poetry. In terms of analysis we'll look at poetry analysis which includes figurative language among other things. The course also included the film "1917" and film analyses of selected scenes.

The Great Gatsby
I dette forløb læser vi Scott Fitzgerald’s roman The Great Gatsby. Vi beskæftiger os dermed med perioden 1920’erne i USA. Eleverne får en grundviden om de historiske, kulturelle og samfundsmæssige forhold på dette tidspunkt, og gennem læsningen af romanen bliver eleverne i stand til at se tegn i romanen på netop disse forhold. De opnår desuden en forståelse for modernismen som skrivestil, de får blik for at se, hvordan romanen afspejler den dobbelthed der karakteriserer perioden – nemlig det ekstravagante og overfladiske liv på den ene side og fattigdommen og oplevelsen af meningsløshed på den anden side. I forbindelse med læsningen af romanen beskæftiger vi os specifikt med den amerikanske drøm(s forfald), livet i New York, med det amerikanske kunstnerliv i Paris og med modernismen og igennem dette arbejde får eleverne en viden som de kan bruge til at perspektivere til aktuelle forhold og andre litterære værker.
I analysen af romanen fokuserer vi særligt på personkarakteristik, miljøbeskrivelse, fortællerforhold, selviscenesættelse og symboler og motiver, og i forbindelse med at vi ser balletforestillingen "Den Store Gatsby" i Operaen diskuterer vi også adaptionen af romanen.
Eleverne skal altså:
Have opnået en viden om perioden – og om hvordan romanen er et udtryk for sin tid
Have opnået forståelse for den meningsløshed og desillusion, der ligger bagved det meget ekstravagante liv, der leves på dette tidspunkt, og også viden om den fattigdom, der også er på dette tidspunkt.
Kunne redegøre for den rolle den amerikanske drøm spiller i romanen
Kunne give personkarakteristikker, der udfolder de værdier, personener repræsenterer
Have opnået en forståelse for, hvordan Fitzgerald gennem romanen kritiserer det amerikanske samfund.
Have opnået viden om (flertallet af) forfattere og kunstneres holdning til det amerikanske samfund i 1920’erne og deres deraf følgende beslutning om at leve (i en periode) i Paris
Kunne redegøre for (nogle) modernistiske træk og kunne genfinde dem i romanen.
Kunne tale på et flydende engelsk med et varieret ordforråd om romanen og om perioden 1920’erne
