Titel A Introduction - Theory of Knowledge

If you’re a little confused, then you’re off to a good start, because you’re going to be confused a lot during the TOK course. TOK is all about wondering, and often your wondering won’t result in you figuring out a clear answer, and you’ll discover that the wondering is sometimes the end product.

In terms of what it deals with, it’s essentially a critical thinking course, which focuses on eight areas of knowledge (AOK's) and eight ways of knowing (WOK's) that are interconnected (but not limited) to your IB Diploma subjects.
It deals with the nature of knowledge (i.e. epistemology) and has a ‘philosophical’ angle - without being the same as philosophy - as it draws on the ideas of many famous thinkers from the present and the past history.

Titel B BQ2 - Purpose and value

BIG QUESTION 2: WHAT IS KNOWLEDGE FOR, AND HOW CAN WE ASSESS ITS VALUE?

The second big question in TOK considers what we ‘do’ with knowledge, focusing on the natural sciences (AOK) and indigenous knowledge systems (AOK). We’ll look at the ideas of Neil deGrasse Tyson, and how he thinks science is vital to the functioning of society, and what Wade Davies tells us about way indigenous societies have a completely different approach to knowledge, in terms of how it is acquired, and the value given to it.

Key thinkers well’ll encounter following this route include Daniel Tammett, Antonio Damasio, Michael Mosley, Barbara Kingsolver, Immanuel Kant, and John Stuart Mill.

We will look at Mappa Mundi, scientific and pseudo-scientific knowledge and falsification. Key thinkers you will encounter include Richard Feynman, Karl Popper, and Molly Crockett.
NB! Two lessons will be used for practise essay writing, connecting this unit with the previous one.
