This unit made up the foundation - together with history classes - for a study trip to Dublin. The focus in English was a unique Irish experience after looking at the British Empire.  We looked at Dublin as a city in the 1800s and the experience of loss during the Easter Rising, both presented in non-fiction but also a traditional ballad. The focus was on language analysis and establishing mood. Finally, we read a novel excerpt and watched a feature film with the same focus, now in post-modern settings, the themes of poverty and poverty mentality, identity and strength in adversity reappearing across centuries.
