Gender Norms in the Victorian Era

Formål:
Formålet med forløbet var, at eleverne fik indsigt i det britiske samfund i den Victorianske æra med særligt fokus på Victorianske kønsroller. Dertil kom en forståelse for den litterære periode og dens karakteristikker i forbindelse med beskrivelser af, og opgør med, datidens kønsroller. Begreber som ”the angel of the house”, ”a fallen woman”, “the Victorian gentleman” vs ”the Byronic Hero”, og “the other Victorians” er blevet udforsket og anvendt på tekster fra perioden. Eleverne har trænet deres evner til at gøre rede for indhold, synspunkter og stilforskelle i engelsksprogede tekster og derved opnået større færdigheder i deres analyse- og fortolkningsevner samt øvet at se tekster i et litteraturhistorisk, kulturelt og samfundsmæssigt perspektiv.
Indhold:
– det engelske sprogs grammatik, ortografi og tegnsætning, samt idiomatik, ordforråd og orddannelse, intonation og udtale
– principper for tekstopbygning og tekstsammenhæng
– standardsprog og variation
– tekstanalytiske begreber
– et udvalg af litterære tekster fra en specifik periode; den Victorianske æra
– væsentlige strømninger i britisk litteraturhistorie og væsentlige sproglige, historiske, kulturelle og samfundsmæssige forhold i Storbritannien i perioden 1837-1901
