Titel 1 Grundforløb: Education

In this course, we explore the topic of education in both the UK and US from a variety of text genres and with a particular focus on vocabulary, word classes, characterization, narrative point of view, and working with quotations and textual evidence. Topics include transitions, school systems, access, inequality, social mobility, opportunities, and will include students’ own experiences and plans, as well as a panel debate with American exchange students.

Titel 2 Gen Z Challenges

Forløbet handler om globale udfordringer for Gen Z med særligt fokus på polariserende emner som pandemien, klimaforandringer, mentalt helbred og generationsforskelle. Vi arbejder med digt- og argumentationsanalyse, som deler sproglige fagtermer, samt globale kompetencer, demokratisk dannelse og karrierelæring/-refleksioner. Argumentationsanalysen er koblet til praksis i arbejdet med selv at konstruere overbevisende argumenter for et synspunkt, bl.a. når vi arbejder med verserende retssager, der drives frem af unge aktivister. Forløbet udmunder i et større tværfagligt projektarbejde med fysik (FS4) om innovation og formidling, hvor Toulmins argumentationsmodel, retoriske greb og overvejelser om kommunikationssituationen anvendes i praksis af eleverne, der udvikler og præsenterer et konkret produkt som løsning på en global klimarelateret problemstilling. I det hele taget fremhæves elevernes egne handlemuligheder i form af diskussioner om aktivisme, om at gennemskue klimaretorik, argumenter baseret på patos og fejlslutninger, og om hvilken rolle Gen Z kan og bør spille i klimadebatten.

Titel 3 UK - New Directions

Building on the analytical framework on argumentation, rhetoric and the communication situation introduced previously, this course examines speeches and communication styles by current political leaders within the Anglosphere. The point of departure is the historic nature of King Charles’ Coronation, at which Scotland, Ireland and Britain were represented by people of color leading their respective countries for the first time. The end of the course coincided with the surprise general election in the UK, so we have discussed key issues, challenges for the UK, as well as results, and examined the anti-immigration riots in the summer of 2024 with reference to aspects of identity and multiculturalism, and how the riots relate to developments in the US.

American Values
As an introduction to the election, we examine America’s understanding of itself as a nation and its role in the world by going back to the first settlers in the 1600s, the Founding of the Nation in the 1700s and (briefly) the Civil War of the 1800s to understand the fault lines and ideals that shape and challenge the American society today. We also examine how these culture wars and divisions are expressed in political communication, poetry, and music.

Titel 5 American Democracy

Building on our knowledge of American values, ideals and fault lines, we explore the political system and the election in more detail with a focus on democracy, voting rights, and democratic principles, as well as the role of the US as a democratic role model, at least until Jan. 6, 2021. In terms of political communication, we examine key target voter groups, the gender gap, and the messaging of the two campaigns. The course encourages keeping up with the news, as well as engaging in discussions and expressing points of view, while also asking students to reflect on the nature of democracy and their own values and responsibilities.

Titel 7 Coming of Age: Literary Perspectives

This course introduces basic literary analysis with a focus on characterization, interpretation, topics vs. themes, structure, narrator, foils, and point of view. Thematically, the texts explore being young while facing existential and life-altering experiences in different historical periods, as the main characters navigate societal and parental expectations and questions of independence and rebellion vs. conformity. Finally, we talk about the importance of books at large in the context of the current reading crisis and brain rot, as well as the ramifications of book bans with regard to the novel "Looking for Alaska." The course ends with a visit from a group of American college students with group conversations on what it is like to be young in the US today, and what it is like to be a young American living in Europe at a very tumultuous time.

Building on our introduction to the Anglosphere and the Commonwealth in 2g, we explore Nigeria as an English-speaking area where cultures, languages and identities clash, with a particular focus on the migrant experience.  We talk about stereotypes, representation, and English as a lingua franca, including reflections on our own communication practices. The course also focuses on written and oral exam practice, including grammar exercises.
