Titel 2 Gen Z Challenges

The course focuses on global challenges facing Gen Z, with particular emphasis on climate change. The goal is to foster global competencies, democratic education, empathy, and career learning/reflection – with an emphasis on solutions and mindsets. We work with poetry and argumentation analysis applied to texts from a range of voices, ages, and  nationalities, while also considering communication strategies for speakers using English as a lingua franca. We also practice the elements of an analytical essay on non-fiction. The argumentation analysis is linked to practical application, where students construct their own persuasive arguments for a given viewpoint. The course is part of a larger interdisciplinary project with physics (FS4) on innovation and communication, where Toulmin’s model of argumentation, rhetorical strategies, and considerations of the communication context are applied in practice. Students develop and present a concrete product that promotes nuclear power as a solution to the climate crisis. Overall, the course highlights students’ own capacity for action through discussions about activism, understanding climate rhetoric, arguments based on emotional appeal (pathos) and fallacies, and the role Gen Z can and should play in the climate debate.

Titel 5 Abortion in the US

In this course, we explore the divisive topic of abortion in the United States, focusing on its historical, legal, political, medical and biological, ethical, cultural, and social dimensions. As abortion is a central and much-debated issue in US politics, students are introduced to the political system, the branches of power, and how the legislative process works when Congress passes laws. In addition, we examine how abortion laws and access have changed over time, from Roe v. Wade (19 73) to Dobbs v. Jackson (2022), while considering the impact of these shifts on individuals and communities across the country. We will also explore how abortion intersects with issues such as reproductive rights, gender equality, healthcare access, religion, and political polarization as we examine discourse and arguments on the topic. The goal is to engage with multiple perspectives on a deeply complex issue, as the course encourages critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and evidence-based reasoning.

Titel 8 Coming of Age

This course repeats basic literary analysis with a focus on characterization, interpretation, topics vs. themes, structure, narrator, foils, and point of view. Thematically, the texts explore being young while facing existential and life-altering experiences as the main characters navigate societal and parental expectations and questions of resources, trauma, independence and rebellion vs. conformity.  In extension of this, we also read non-fiction that revolves around transitions into other life stages and important choices while considering the differences between fiction and non-fiction and how we receive such life lessons. The course also includes a visit from a group of American college students with group conversations on what it is like to be young in the US today, what it is like to be a young American living in DK/Europe at a very tumultuous time, and differences and similarities between the Danish and American educational systems  and how various opportunities impact the choices one makes.
