Titel 5 American Democracy

(Forløbet opgives ikke særskilt til eksamen, men grundlæggende viden om USA fra forløbet forventes at kunne inddrages)

This course examines the foundations of American democracy, the structure of the United States political system, and the dynamics of modern elections and political culture. Building on an understanding of American values, ideals, and historical fault lines, students explore how democratic principles are practiced, challenged, and debated in contemporary America with an emphasis on ideology, populism, and polarization. Through the study of campaign advertisements, speeches, debates, and media coverage, students will evaluate how political messages are designed for different voter groups and how political communication works in different genres. Special attention is given to the role of the United States as a democratic model internationally and to contemporary challenges to democracy, including the events surrounding January 6, 2021. We return to the consequences of the election one year later and examine how America’s role is shifting on the global scene and how we now perceive our most important ally. Students develop skills in critical analysis, discussion, research, and media literacy through the examination and production of political communication materials, including campaign videos and electoral analysis.

Titel 6 Happy Birthday, America!

As the United States celebrates its semiquincentennial, this course explores ideas, conflicts, and voices that have shaped the American experience. Through literature, music, and cultural analysis, students examine how Americans have defined freedom, patriotism, and the “American Dream” in different eras, with a major focus on social and cultural changes in the 1920s as a parallel to today. Building on a thorough understanding of basic values and principles from previous courses on American democracy, this course centers on the tensions between idealism and reality in American life, while examining how Americans see individual vs. community, negotiate inequality, question tradition, and search for individual and shared identity. Part of the course is a lengthy conversation with visiting American college students, who help us understand these issues from the perspective of the next generation of voters as we consider what it means to be American at the nation’s 250th birthday.
